Synopsis: Murphy is a tough loner serving hard time at Folsom Prison. His world is a living hell with no chance of release or escape from the prison and its routine tortures. As Murphy becomes more... Murphy is a tough loner serving hard time at Folsom Prison. His world is a living hell with no chance of release or escape from the prison and its routine tortures. As Murphy becomes more withdrawn, nasty, and bitter, he begins to lose all hope as his soul, mind, and body wither away. However, Murphy discovers a way to free himself from his slow death. He finds release and momentary happiness in long-distance running. Soon, Murphy realizes that he is a superb runner, capable of competing in the Olympics if given the chance. Though others share this belief, Murphy is not allowed permission to run outside the facility. Eventually, Murphy still competes within the walls of the prison, hidden from the eyes of the world. A poignant story of determination, Michael Mann's film is an inspiring directorial debut. Peter Strauss, as Murphy, gives an especially fine performance in this movie originally made for television.
