Consensus: Anchored by dazzling performances from Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Renée Zellweger, as well as Cameron Crowe's tender direction, Jerry Maguire meshes romance and sports with panache.

Tom Cruise plays Jerry Maguire, a slick sports agent who realizes that he hates how he is living his life and encourages his fellow employees to get back to the important basics: people, loyalty, and fairness. Unfortunately, Maguire's new moral compass costs him his job, and he is left to start his business anew with one work ally, agency accountant Dorothy Boyd (Renée Zellweger), and his least important client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Maguire embarks on a journey of personal growth that forces him to reevaluate his life choices and ultimately leads him to both friendship and love. Like his earlier films, SAY ANYTHING and SINGLES, this award-winning Cameron Crowe film features snappy dialogue, comic relief, and the occasional tear-jerking moment. Stellar performances are turned in from Cruise, Zellweger, and Gooding, Jr., as well as supporting cast members Bonnie Hunt, Jay Mohr, Regina King, and Kelly Preston. [More]

Reviews for Jerry Maguire
A meandering and deeply shallow tale of spiritual redemption, built around the Teflon persona of Tom Cruise and driven by the conviction that all emotions worth expressing can be summed up in pop songs.
It talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk. Or, in other words, it simply doesn't have heart.
Lauded as a witty moral fable with a revelatory performance from its star, this romantic comedy is in fact meretricious, manipulative and reactionary.
Cameron Crowe, Tom Cruise, and Cuba Gooding Jr. are salesmen, and we're consumers, buying emotional truth. That's a brave message for a commercial film to have. Too bad it's unintentional.
Even Cruise can't capsize Cameron Crowe's entertaining romantic drama.
It's not coincidental that writer-director Crowe (Singles,Say Anything...) is also in top form, creating a raft of sweetly believable characters and complex relationships.
Director Cameron Crowe has written and directed a deft, funny, shamelessly upbeat romantic comedy and to top it all drawn out the finest performance of Tom Cruise's career.
competently made parallel plotted film whose buddy sports film elements outshine its rom-com aspects.
Tom Cruise is in top form playing Jerry Maguire, a slick sports agent with a heart.
Cruise is at the top of his form, and Gooding makes a brilliant opponent.
The combination of Crowe's exceptional script and the superior cast, highlighted by Cruise's flawless performance, results in one of the years most substantial movies.
An engaging and full-tilt movie about how attention enhances both love and work.
This is the kind of movie that reminds me why I started reviewing in the first place.
