Shot in various churches in the director's native Austria, the film dispenses with interviews and consists of static shots of religious people speaking to the camera as if it were God. Their prayers offer insight into their deepest fears and concerns, while the lack of response intimates the filmmaker's implicit question: is anybody listening? A woman laments her husband's affair, while another discusses her Pakistani husband's television habits, and a teenage boy reveals his sexual fantasies about Biblical stories. True to form, Seidl highlights the oddities located within the average soul, but his treatment is ever so slightly more compassionate than in his previous work. [More]

Reviews for Jesus, You Know
The film proves the dramatic power of the cinematic close-up by not including a single one.
It takes a giant leap of faith to accept that Jesus, You Know wasn't staged.
If watching devout churchgoers pray to Jesus before a static camera sounds like the dullest idea ever for a documentary, think again: This might be the most fun you've ever had in church.
[A] complex and deeply moving documentary of Catholics at prayer, who remarkably speak to the camera as they do to God.
Thanks to the approach used in filming, the mundane and familiar problems that these people speak of become an informative & entertaining presentation of a collective pathos.
