TELEVISION RELEASE: FEBRUARY 7, 2001 (CBS) Based on the Oprah Winfrey Book Club selection by Brett Lott, JEWEL's exploration of familial bonds and motherly love will bring tears to the eyes of many viewers. Farrah Fawcett stars as Jewel Hillard in this made-for-television movie, playing a backwoods Mississippi housewife with four children and a loving husband. As WWII comes toward a close, Jewel's house servant, Cathedral (Cicely Tyson), comes out on a stormy night to warn Jewel that the babe in her belly is a harbinger of hardship sent from God. After a difficult childbirth, Cathederal's prediction comes true--the new child, Brenda Kay Hillard, is, as the local doctor calls her, a "mongolian idiot." Determined that loving care will return her baby to health, Jewel refuses to give up Brenda Kay to an institution. But the very care that Brenda Kay requires may destroy Jewel's marriage, and the bonds that tie her to the rest of her family. Director Paul Shapiro's static camera delivers this touching story with subtlety, the southern landscape photogropahy is beautiful, and the touching score and sound design round out a quality production.
