Michael Douglas Returns for Another "Stone" Sequel
by Binh Ngo | January 26, 2005
Discuss Article
Michael Douglas will star in another sequel to the 1984 hit "Romancing the Stone," IGN FilmForce reports. "Racing the Monsoon," which Douglas will also produce, is to be directed by Steven Carr, who helmed "Daddy Day Care." The filmmakers apparently hope to tap Aishwarya Rai for a part in the film as well. Production is slated to begin at the end of the year. The first sequel to "Romancing the Stone," The Jewel of the Nile," was released in 1985 to lackluster business.

Wow .. i loved that movie when it came out. I didn't like Jewel of the Nile mostly because of Danny DeVito, not because of Douglas or Turner.

I'm not sure if another movie shall be done
I loved "Romancing the Stone", but the sequel was not as good as the first one, in Romancing the Stone, Douglas and Turner are in Cartagena searching an emerald, in "The Jewel of the Nile", they help a man to come back to the comunity and stop a terrorist. This was not an adventure film exactly.

What do I mean with it?. I mean, if the third movie is another adventure searching for an object with lots of action, love and fun, this sequel must be done.

Finally, Kathleen Turner mujst be in the sequel, if not, don't waste your time and money, the film is gonna be a boredom.

Kathleen Turner is old!
The cruelty is, studio don't want an old woman to play the lead!

Not a sequel
According to Douglas's rep, it will not be a sequel:

Aishwarya Rai? that's all you have to say. I've already bought my ticket. This woman is so unbelievably beautiful... it just doesn't seem right.

Your saying that this movie is no sequal and im not argueing the fact that it may not be ,but what the hell actually is it .This cant be a prequal because of michael douglas, isnt he like 60 something now.and i like a hot looking woman as much as the next man but i dont see this movie being as good without turner, even if shes old and wrinkled now.

I can see why they hesitate to call this a sequal. The way I see it, if Kathleen Turner isn't a part of the project then its just a waste of time, though in that case they might want to call it a sequal since most sequals are wastes of time. The classic "War of the Roses" was done when Douglas, Turner and DeVito didn't want to do a third film in the "Romancing the Stone" franchise, and they instead opted to do an original film. To try to do a third film now, especially without Turner or DeVito is an insult to the original and even its less then perfect, but stilll fun sequal. They'd have a lot of convincing to do to get people back to see Jack without Joan.

Sad, sad, sad
It's a sad fact that studio people will still sell Michael Douglas as a romantic lead and ignore Kathleen Turner. But that doesn't mean Douglas trying to make this movie without Turner is the right idea. The fact is, those movies are about HER character, not his; without that relationship, his character isn't really that distinctive or memorable. I mean, she was Joan Wilder -- what was his name? I have no idea.

The great thing about those earlier movies was that they combined comedy and adventure with romance; by making a movie that shows him without her, Douglas is basically telling the audience that the romance of the earlier movies wasn't all that great. So why sign up for a third? And given that his character, whatever his name was, was kind of washed-up and down on his luck even back then, why would any woman as beautiful as Aishwarya Rai want to have anything to do with his 60-year-old self? Michael Douglas might have a gorgeous young wife, but he's a millionaire movie star. Make him broke and unreliable, and Aishwarya Rai can do better on her worst day.

Anyway, won't see this, and strongly suspect most people won't bother.
