Movie Info

A long-standing gang war on the streets of Hiroshima escalates despite police pressure in this, the fourth film in Kinji Fukasaku's Yakuza Papers series. It's 1964, and with the Tokyo Olympics turning the eyes of the world to Japan, lawmen have set out to keep the Yakuza -- Japan's organized crime system -- out of sight. While dozens of low-level mobsters are thrown into jail, crime lord Takeda (Akira Kobayashi) attempts to keep the peace for the best of all parties on the wrong side of the law. … More

Audience Reviews for Jingi naki tatakai: Chojo sakusen (Battles Without Honor and Humanity 4: Police Tactics)

Police Tactics is the fourth in director Kinji Fukasaku's five-volume Yakuza Papers series. The illusion of honor these individuals have spent years trying to maintain has begun to dissipate, leaving many corpses along the way. The whole house of cards has started to collapse in gritty fashion. The ending of the film really sets the tension for the final episode in the 5th film.

Great to see Hiroki Matsukata return in the film as a different character because he is a big reason why the first film was so good, but he was killed in this film just as he was in the first. On the other hand, Matsunaga was missing which I did not like because he brought a lot to the last two films before this. The style of direction and constantly going back and forth between different groups was a novelty in the 3 earlier films, that wore off with this one. A big problem is that the central character Shozo Hirono keeps disappearing from the story by being sent to jail and what not, but soon Fukasaku ran out of interesting characters that could command attention like Hirono. The two sequels before sometimes had some great side characters, but with this film I just kept waiting for him to return. The large scale war never really happens on huge scale which is disappointing considering that the film before this set expectations for that to happen. I think it was not presented properly. The character of Uchimoto became a huge bore. The ending was not one I enjoyed. The weakest out of all the films so far. Looking forward with a lot of hope that the last film in the series delivers like the first one did.
