Perhaps the sequel - if we ever get there - will fill in the gaps and expand on John Carter's legend now all the expositional heavy-lifting has been done. But is that an acceptable excuse for an epic to be this underwhelming?
Mar 1 - 06:02 PM
Fabio is the greatest actor of our time!!!!!
Mar 2 - 12:07 PM
Okay, then. This gets the same rating as This Means War, does it?
Mar 1 - 06:58 PM
Wow -- this review was written by a kid?
Seriously, though... Over 90% of the reviews and reactions out there have been positive: from solidly good to phenomenally great.
This guy will stick out with a handful of other critics who decided a long time ago to dislike this film based on the horrendous Disney marketing.
Me? I'm stoked.
Mar 1 - 07:08 PM
Or you know, maybe he just didn't like it...
Mar 1 - 09:47 PM
Seriously, this guy is entitled to his opinion. But the couple of critical gripes are less persuasive than the otherwise overwhelming critical praise.
Mar 2 - 05:08 AM
I don't think I'd call 77% based on 13 reviews as "overwhelming critical praise" whatsoever...
Mar 3 - 04:26 AM
Only a fraction of the positive reviews have been posted by RT -- and so far they've posted ALL of the negative reviews to date.
We'll see how it all pans out. Around 80% fresh would be more than just fine.
I'd like this film to do well, despite the horrible marketing. It's my instinct to root for the underdog, I guess.
Mar 3 - 06:57 AM
This is Disney we're talking about, they are in no way an 'underdog'. After all this time if they don't know how to properly market a movie than tough shit. This is all on them.
Mar 4 - 11:56 AM
Mar 9 - 10:35 AM
Oh, this'll make those looking forward to JOHN CARTER feel better...
The critic-kid who gave JC this lackluster review (2.5 stars) also gave XMEN FIRST CLASS 2.5 stars, SUCKER PUNCH 3.5 stars, and HUMAN CENTIPEDE II 3 stars...
Mar 1 - 07:50 PM
Yeah, that definitely tells me to disregard this review. First Class was fantastic.
Mar 1 - 09:26 PM
Do you work for the John Carter marketing team or something? If not, then calm down, you fucking nerd.
Mar 1 - 09:31 PM
Mar 1 - 10:51 PM
Ok ok, Simon.
Keep your panties on. Jeez.
Mar 2 - 04:22 AM
I know, right?
Mar 8 - 05:53 PM
And BTW, friendo: I'm sticking up for this film because the marketing has been do BAD, and because it looks like a legitimate gem.
Who knows. Maybe I'll hate it. But the critics who liked or loved it are a lot more persuasive than the couple who didn't.
And what's wrong with being a nerd, you pathetic bonehead?
Haven't you noticed? We rule the world.
Mar 2 - 04:33 AM
I'm honestly not trying to be a dick but I think you hit the nail on the head. The trailers I've seen for this movie mad it look like a POS film. I really don't have any intentions of seeing this film because of the trailers. Besides I just saw a commercial quoting "before there was Star Wars etc etc.. " The marketing does a terrible job at trying to convince me that I should see it. Why is this "John Carter" so special?
Mar 4 - 09:56 PM
You do understand that not everyone is going to like this movie right? You probably assume that every movie that you didn't like should have a zero, and that every movie that you do like should have a 100. As for his other reviews, it's his opinion. EVERY SINGLE CRITIC is going to like movies better than others that might seem ridiculous. Roger Ebert didn't like Kick-ass, and you could go and say: Oh, so he thinks this is just as bad as Just Go With It, huh? And he even liked death at a funeral more than this? What the hell? His review is not supposed to sum up all of the hype it's to give his own opinion. Clearly he liked Human Centipede 2 more, but that doesn't mean that it's necessarily a better movie. It just is in his opinion. Yes, he does like This Means War just as much. Maybe you won't, but he does. It doesn't even have to convince you. Stop posting stupid comments on this guys review. And clearly he didn't dislike the movie because of the marketing. He wouldn't say: "I liked the movie, but the marketing was horrendous. 2.5 for me."
Mar 4 - 10:23 AM
Really good point, glad you qualified this review for me. I am really looking forward to this movie. The point of the books was not just the characters, it was the overall environment and story. John Carter is not the franchise, so we don't need to know everything about him, Barsoom is the franchise.
Mar 4 - 03:33 PM
When he gave X-men: First Class a bad review, he was the first one to break the 100%, then posted on Twitter: "Hey everyone, I brought X-men: First Class down to 96%! Come and troll on my review!" Don't give a moment's attention to those who defend the negative reviews on this website like w@velength or Stepping Razor. Those two haven't posted anything other than a few insults and jokes that not many understand. Gibbrish. Sorry, guys, but this guy reviews movies badly just to be fed by trolls. I'm going to see this movie, and I'm going to love it.
Mar 5 - 04:10 PM
Mar 1 - 08:25 PM
Yup. Bad review to anybody who doesn't give this movie a fresh, right?
Mar 4 - 10:30 AM
you call that a review wow
Mar 1 - 08:59 PM
Look people, Simon here agrees with the Tomatometer 80% of the time, yet some of you are judging him from two movies out of the hundreds he has reviewed, such as X-Men: First Class (rotten) to Sucker Punch (fresh). That doesn't justify him as an unreliable critic! Honestly, I enjoy some pretty bad movies, too (Grown Ups, The Pacifier). But that doesn't mean my opinion is invalid. That only can occur if you're the mega-douche Armond White or if your review is like, "Tis movie suks becuz ther no" whatever.
Mar 8 - 06:03 PM
Random question, how do you select "want to see it" or "not interested"? Can't find it anywhere.
Mar 1 - 10:53 PM
It should be right beside your avatar just beneath the rating of the movie ( currently 80% thanks to this reviewers poor taste in movie. Seriously, sucker punch was horrible).
Mar 2 - 11:46 AM
Weird, I see that on the main RT page but I can't see where to select "want to see it" or "not interested" for specific movies.
Mar 2 - 04:34 PM
You didn't like X-Men: First Class (an amazing movie) but you liked Sucker Punch (a dreadful movie), therefore your review is invalis. As a huge X-Men and John Carter of Mars fan, I only have one thing to say: screw you.
Mar 2 - 02:25 AM
booo you suck
Mar 2 - 03:56 PM
"Looks like every other Star Wars wannabe fantasy action movie out there... from the trailer looks like it suffers from an anorexic plot and brings nothing new to the table."
This was written by Letitia Lew so called super reviewer on RT. Everyone needs to let her know of her ignorance.
Mar 2 - 08:12 PM
James Murphy II
I would love to let her know how idiotic that post is..seeing as how this story influenced Science Fiction as a whole
Mar 4 - 04:19 PM
So does your face but you don't here me complaining
Mar 3 - 11:27 AM
Probably because there were too many chefs in the kitchen.
Mar 4 - 01:20 AM
Mar 5 - 04:11 PM
Please ignore the "Razor" troll. He's clearly a blithering idiot in spite of sporting a really excellent avatar from one of the all-time great films.
Mar 5 - 08:16 PM
He probably feels insecure about his own image and so he uses a different photo of a person cooler than he is to make himself feel better.
Mar 5 - 08:59 PM
Spot-on review. There's some great stuff here, but way too much exposition.
Mar 6 - 01:40 AM
Sponge Bob Generations strikes again. The lack of an attention span in today's youth always screams through when you get comments about "expositional heaving-lifting". Mind as well have just said, I wanna see more explosions.
Mar 10 - 12:26 PM
Wow.. more & more critics seem to get more stupid & lacking in imagination each & everyday! Not to mention ignorant & lacking an attention span! And you didn't like X-Men First Class either?!? Enough said..
Mar 11 - 12:51 AM
