The achievement of John Carter is that it takes the elements worn to nubs by everything from Star Wars to Avatar to TV's Fringe and makes them fresh again.
This is an interesting review: a critic not familiar with the source material (though he read the Tarzan novels), and someone who didn't go into the theater with absurdly high expectations, or who made up his mind that he wasn't going to enjoy himself. He clearly did. And he seems to have had fun writing up his reactions, all of which add up to the suggestion that if you stop worrying about how much the movie cost and stop trying to judge the CGI using your laptop or smartphone, you might actually have a good time.

I guess expectations were high because the first quarter of the year is always a cinematic drag. Maybe if Disney gets a change of heart, a sequel has a chance of being an improvement. The movie looks to be at least above prince of Persia and Clash of the Titans.
