It's to the great credit of Tran and his cast that the movie has such immediacy, gracefulness and power.

With its harrowing tale of a Vietnamese family's experiences following the fall of Saigon in 1975, JOURNEY FROM THE FALL depicts a side of the Vietnam War that has seldom been depicted on the screen. Foregoing much explanation of the country's political turmoil, director Ham Tran (who also wrote and edited) instead chooses to dwell on the emotionally fertile ground of an anti-communist family's efforts to reunite and find freedom when their homeland becomes uninhabitable. Imprisoned in a brutal communist re-education camp in 1981, Long (Long Nguyen) must endure brutal beatings and indescribable squalor at the hands of his abductors. Having made the choice several years before to remain in Vietnam and fight, he urged his wife, Mai (Diem Len); mother, Ba Noi (Kieu Chinh); and young son, Lai (Nguyen Thai Nguyen), to attempt escape by boat. The three endure a torturous journey by sea, finally arriving and setting in Orange County, California. Unsure if she'll ever see her husband again, Mai begins a relationship with Nam (Khanh Doan), the captain who brought her to the U.S. Meanwhile, Lai has difficulty adapting to school, often getting into trouble. Fueled by a furtively received packet of his son's drawings, Long attempts to escape and find his family. Realistic and free of Hollywood sentiment, JOURNEY FROM THE FALL is unflinching in its look at the lives of the "boat people." Tran's use of shifts in time within the narrative (much like Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's 21 GRAMS) give the first portion of the film an impressionistic feel, but the strong performances are straightforward and effective in their portrayal of people forced to leave home, only to find that freedom is still rife with restrictions. Reviews for Journey From The Fall
An emotionally moving film that presents the story of the Vietnam War aftermath from the perspective of those who once called themselves Vietnamese.
It's a snippet of one family forever altered, and despite all the political undertones, it's the human level on which the film succeeds most of all.
An emotionally intense story of capture, imprisonment, torture and escape.
Despite some initial unsteadiness, helming shows considerable style as well as ambition.
A first-rate cast, script, committed director and physical production that burns with authenticity make Journey From the Fall affecting history for all who wish to avoid the doom of forgetting its lesson.
Beautifully photographed and acted, it's a story that sticks with you.
An aching look at the rigors experienced by a people denied a true place in the world to call their own.
Scenes from the Vietnam reeducation camp could have occurred anywhere, but Vietnamese-American audiences will relate especially to this film.
As a fictional version of historical fact, it artfully tells a story of humanity that will interest anyone who wants to understand what happens in a war zone when the shooting stops.
Journey From the Fall deserves commendation for its intelligent and nuanced account of the Vietnamese refugee experience. Kudos to Tran and his fine cast, many of whom had never acted before, for making this moving and artfully crafted film.
There are some genuinely moving moments in [the] latter part of the film, but the inconsistencies and the overwrought structure of the screenplay seriously dilute the overall effectiveness of 'Journey from the Fall.'
A stunningly ambitious Vietnamese-American indie film that aims to wrap up the whole of the Vietnamese experience into a Vietnamese Exodus.
noteworthy film provides unforgettable human faces that bring greater awareness about this under reported history
A movingly rendered, stirringly photographed first feature by Ham Tran.
Depicts one family's endurance in sturdy, old-movie style, with sweeping camerawork, a monumental and occasionally intrusive orchestral score, brazen escapes and crowd-pleasing acts of defiance to fuel several action-adventure pictures.
An example of sophisticated, impassioned filmmaking involving mainly people who lived through the harrowing experiences so unsparingly depicted, Journey From the Fall powerfully illustrates the refugee/immigrant experience.
