With JOY RIDE, Dahl streamlines the plot and ratchets up the tension. Two brothers, Lewis (Paul Walker) and Fuller (Steve Zahn) are driving home cross-country. Fuller bullies Lewis into using the CB radio ("Prehistoric internet," Fuller calls it) to play a mean-spirited practical joke on a trucker, and it backfires horribly. The psychotic trucker comes after them, but they get away. Foolishly thinking they're out of danger, they pick up Venna (Leelee Sobieski), the girl Lewis has been pining for, on the way home. The mysterious trucker, who they know only by his CB handle, "Rusty Nail," goes further than they could ever imagine to exact his revenge. Zahn is pitch-perfect here, capturing both Fuller's charm and his stupid recklessness. Dahl builds the suspense beautifully, creating a real sense of being out on the highway in the middle of nowhere. The script, by Clay Tarver and J.J. Abrams, brings three strong characters to life with sharp, funny dialogue, fleshing out the bare bones of the plot. [More]

Reviews for Joy Ride
It's an easy film to critique for what it doesn't do, but what it does do very well is take you for a comically dark fantasy ride...
Dahl works the audience like the dial of a car radio, testing out all manner of squeals and static and all-out, high-pitched terror.
This taut thriller is sharply directed by John Dahl and benefits from fine, low-key performances by Walker, Sobieski and Zahn.
Ups the fear factor by adding an anonymous figure, one that cannot be reasoned with, whose only goal is to get his hands on you.
Dahl and scene-stealer Steve Zahn deserve praise for breathing some entertaining new life into a generally stale genre.
No real suspense, and no payoff except for a groan-inducing, look-out-here-comes-the-sequel ending.
Since most thrillers ignore matters of logic, character and pacing, Joy Ride is an innovation because it doesn't.
Superior to the majority of the yawn-inducing suspensers out there these days.
An absolutely merciless thriller--exciting, marvelously crafted, strongly acted, and with more than a few moments destined to increase your heartbeat.
People who are looking for a good scare, with plenty of Steve Zahn laughs along the way, will be satisfied.
