Julien Donkey-Boy is never boring to watch. But it is less than inspired in its subject matter.

He tries to avoid the abuse of his sadistic drunken gas-mask-wearing father (German director Werner Herzog). He cracks a young boy's head open with a rock. He befriends a blind figure skater. He wears a bra and underwear as he wrestles with his younger brother. And his sister, Pearl (Chloë Sevigny), is pregnant--with Julien's child. Writer-director Harmony Korine succeeds remarkably well in showing the world through Julien's eyes: a schizophrenic kaleidoscope of images--some hauntingly beautiful, some disturbing and violent. The first American film made in accordance with the Danish filmmaking manifesto Dogma 95 (which also includes THE CELEBRATION and MIFUNE), JULIEN DONKEY-BOY uses no cinematic tricks such as artificial lighting or studio sound. Shot on handheld digital video, the film was transferred to 16mm stock before being blown up to 35mm film for the final print. Korine used this unique method to give the film the low-definition, degraded look of an old Super-8 home movie. Pushing the envelope further, Korine rejects classic narrative storytelling in favor of a more poetic succession of scenes. The result is a gritty, surreal collage that powerfully and touchingly evokes the schizophrenic experience as few films have. [More]

Reviews for Julien Donkey-Boy
The picture is so personal to the filmmaker, so lacking universality and general interest to a diverse audience, that it might as well be a home movie shown to bored uncles and aunts.
Julien donkey-boy is a mess. The story is virtually non-existent and, because of the Dogme restraints, the film is much darker and considerably more grainy than Gummo.
[Korine's] desire to color outside the lines has led to some interesting experimentation. When he figures out what it is he wants to say, he may even become an artist.
The sophomore directorial effort of Harmony Korine is one steaming, smelly pile of cinematic excrement.
The director must have wanted to impart an unfettered spontaneity to the audience. It doesn't quite happen, because of Korine's constraints as a filmmaker.
julien donkey-boy is fascinating viewing for a movie that has nothing to say and nowhere to go.
Donkey-Boy exists in an uneasy space between documentary, improvisation, and fictional narrative, and often makes one suspect that Korine may be exploiting his oddball cast.
It adds up to something, unlike a lot of movies where individual shots are sensational, but they add up to nothing.
Julian Donkey-Boy, a movie so edgy that you'd like to push it off the edge of a cliff.
Julien feels like it could go blow up at any time. It implodes instead, and the meltdown, though visible in one of the final sequences, is still corrosive.
