Historically inaccurate, horribly miscast, ineffective, over-the-top, and bad acting. Aside from the entertaining battle scenes, the film was basically a mess. This is certainly not a film I would pick up at the local blockbuster to watch for an evening. Unfortunetly, I had to view this one at school, and what's worse
is, the teacher is using it as a teaching tool for Caesar's life. I truly wonder if he understands that it's just a mildly entertaining hack film that has little historical accuracy. The actor that portrayed Caesar was laughable. He was a terrible choice for the part, I mean come on, why would you cast a skinny, wimpy looking actor as the strong Julius Caesar? Let's touch more on the note of historical innaccuracy. Since I had recently studied Ancient Rome in my Honors World History class, I was amazed at the historical inaccuracy. Can the writers not research on the subject they're trying to portray? I won't go into many details of the innaccuracy, but, again, I found it to be somewhat pathetic. One of the biggest faults of the film is the chronological errors. When Sulla took entered Rome, Cato, a senator, who appears to be in his 40s, is shown. In reality, he was only in his early teenage years. They also omitted many important historical characters that play key roles in history. Caesar also seems to randomly go from event to event without any motivation or cause. Finally, I'll end it with the portrayol of many of the characters. Sulla is represented as evil, but in reality, he did much good for Rome. Oh well, I guess that's what you get when a crummy writer/director team unite. Final Rating: 21/100
