The raw power and anything-can-happen style of the first "Jungle Book" is lost in this sequel, and those bare necessities are lacking.

Disney's "Man Cub" Mowgli (voice of Haley Joel Osment) is back in this animated sequel to the 1967 classic. Mowgli, now living with an adopted family in a nearby jungle village, is homesick for his jungle adventures and his good friends, like Baloo the Bear (voice of John Goodman) and Bagheera the Panther (voice of Bob Joles). But because the villagers believe that the jungle is a dangerous place for children, Mowgli isn't allowed to visit. Bored and lonely, he dreams of his carefree days in the jungle and finally runs away from his new home to visit the jungle and the friends he left behind. This time he is followed by his neighbor Shanti (voice of Mae Whitman) and together they meet Baloo and friends for more adventures. The fun-loving, jovial bear is overjoyed to see his old friend, and a little jealous of Shanti, but together they share some spirited JUNGLE BOOK moments, to the tune of original classics like "Bare Necessities" and "I Wanna Be Like You" and new hits like "W.I.L.D." Mowgli is thrilled that things in the jungle haven't changed, until he realizes that Shere Khan (voice of Tony Jay) the Tiger is thirsty for revenge and threatening to harm his jungle family. Together with Shanti, Baloo, Bagheera, and some new faces like Lucky the Vulture (Phil Collins) Mowgli must fight Shere Khan one last time. [More]

Reviews for Jungle Book 2
Rudyard Kipling, on whose book all this is based, managed to have his name taken off the credits from beyond the grave, proving that in death he has a savvier agent than those responsible for this script.
John Goodman's Baloo admits, 'King Louie? He split!' Before the third defibrillation of 'Bare Necessities,' you and your kids might too.
More development and nuance in Karl Geurs' script would have made a big difference.
Wait for it to come out on video, it'll baby sit a four-year-old. Anybody else is gonna be bored by it.
Disney’s The Jungle Book 2, contrary to belief, doesn’t have all the “Bare Necessities” needed to elevate this simplistic family fare beyond its direct-to-video status...a recycled, third-rate kiddie diversion that Disney haphazardly conjured up
If the only moments worth remembering are fleeting glimpses of 1967, why bother? Because Disney wants your dollars, that’s why — and your only alternative at the multiplex this season is 'Kangaroo Jack.'
Shows little weakness in its competent construction and animation. Rather, its major problem involves how generic the whole thing is.
You should skip the theatrical release and rent it -- don’t buy it -- when it arrives on video, where it should have gone in the first place.
That scratching sound you hear isn't Baloo the bear rubbing against a tree, it's Disney scraping the bottom of the sequel barrel with a follow-up that has none of the charm or creativity of the original.
Like its predecessor, there's lively animation that will inspire children to tap their feet to the jungle rhythms and parents to recall their childhoods.
