Her... A volunteer home care worker, Nishina Rika (Megumi Okina), enters the home of a bed-ridden patient and discovers a strange ghostly presence lurking behind a door sealed with duct tape. Her discovery unleashes a horrible evil which baffles police investigators, who find that a whole series of people have gone missing from this particular house. Further investigation leads to Izutni Toyama (Misa Uehara), a former detective who handled the case of a man who murdered his wife in the house, but whose son was never found. But when the angry "Ju-On" spirit of vengeance that has infected the house reaches beyond its boundaries to kill Toyama and his daughter, Rika realizes that the horror is spreading. Worse, unless something is done about it, she feels she may become the angry spirit's next victim! Just like your average American horror franchise, Ju-On repeats the same handful of motifs over and over again, then appears to collapse into incoherence.

The fragmented tale is a tangled mess, and the actors have no characterizations to play, apart from shrieking cowardice.

... succumbs to terminal stupid-itis, the very same ailment that's demolished plenty of other horror movies through the years.

It has a high creepiness quotient with a few good scares, but not much of a story.

Horror fans will hold a grudge against writer/director Takashi Shimizu for conjuring some of the most frightening wraiths in cinematic history, only to dull their terror with repetition and a convoluted plot.

The viewer isn't drawn into a sustained suspense, but is merely subjected to a series of more or less foreseeable shocks.

A wannabe scarefest that hides its lack of originality beneath a deliberately discombobulating structure.

There are too many characters and few of them are portrayed in a way that would allow audience to really care about their fate.

One could say Shimizu begrudges historical perspective in favor of pandering to a hip audience’s short-attention spans.

A nearly bloodless and scare-free exercise in futility, jumping from scene to scene with very little continuity and even less comprehension of the concept of true fear.

A series of scare scenes that seem arbitrary even by the lax standards of the genre. If you like a little logic to go with your cinematic chills, you'd better look elsewhere.
