Wildly imaginative, visually manic.

Based on the hit Japanese novel SHIMOTSUMA STORY by Novala Takemoto, KAMIKAZE GIRLS is a charming, unique, and very funny film. Pop star Kyoko Fukada stars as Momoko, a 17-year-old girl so obsessed with everything rococo that she wears old-fashioned frilly white clothing and carries a parasol. After her mother (Ryoko Shinohara) leaves and her would-be yakuza father (Hiroyuki Miyasako) gets kicked out of the big city for selling the wrong kind of designer knock-offs, Momoko and her dad move to the country, living with Momoko's somewhat offbeat grandmother (Kirin Kiki). Desperate for money, Momoko starts selling the remainder of her father's counterfeit clothing, but her only customer is a tough-talking young biker chick, Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya), who belongs to an all-girl gang. Against all probability, the two very different teenagers become best friends, even though neither will admit it. And when Ichigo faces serious danger, Momoko must decide whether she can save the day. Writer-director Tetsuya Nakashima infuses the delightful KAMIKAZE GIRLS with fast-paced scenes, goofy flashbacks, playful sets, bright colors, and an endearing and infectious sense of fun in every shot. Reviews for Kamikaze Girls
What the film does say, with infectious exuberance, is that in a world in which shopping trumps all, it's so much nicer to go with a friend.
The premise of Kamikaze might be similar to a younger and kitschy Thelma & Louise, but it is never less than appealingly surreal.
...this pop-culture bouillabaisse...is so wacky and fast-paced that it's hard to reconstruct much of it 24 hours later. While it's going down, however, it's always diverting and occasionally hilarious.
The perfect cup of bubble tea for those struggling with philosophical issues such as 'What is happiness? Making clothes or wearing them?'
As exciting for its beautifully specific and honest portrayal of teenage girls and their friendships as it is for its dazzling visual and narrative style.
Utterly silly but still thoroughly original, it has more spunk than a half-dozen studio teen flicks
For this viewer, the climactic scooter-gang rumble, heavy on plot twists and empowerment speeches, felt eternal, but for many, the happy silliness of the film’s first half should carry the day.
Nakashima vividly captures the zeitgeist of today's Japanese youth culture, obsessed with fashion, pachinko games and speedy pop culture.
In spite of its individual pleasures, the film has very little in its head.
This droll Japanese import puts the predictable banality of most Hollywood teen flicks to shame.
Kamikaze Girls, while being a silly, freewheeling, candy-colored lollapalooza, is also a heartfelt tale of friendship.
Packed so densely with style there is not enough room left for substance.
Nakashima never allows the story to set foot in any kind of reality, and keeps the comic book panels flashing by.
...a super-stylized, fast-paced romp. Sharp-wittedly reflexive, culturally specific, and unabashedly fun...
