the first of shimizu's films that i have seen was a pleasant surprise. an early film for chishu ryu, the film was simple but charming and had some thoughtful things to say about living a life worth meaning and the value of friendship. this film gives me great excitement to pursue more of shimizu's films.
The premise is almost the same as The Masseurs and a Woman, with the romantic longing in that film replaced with "poetic illusion" here. Kinuyo Tanaka plays a woman trying to escape from her life as a geisha. All dramatic conventions are underplayed and eluded in favor of a the daily activities of the vacationers, and the film follows no typical story. This is all good, though it's kind of boring and tedious to watch Chishu Ryu hobble around, to hear the hypocritical professor complain about his food, and the other guest's little quirks. It's similar to the far more beautiful and entertaining beach interlude in Sonatine. I definitely liked Masseurs more due to its poignant ending.
