opTIMus Nerd writes: on Sep 28 2007 06:43 AM I hope they just start re-making every single film that was released between 1980 and 1988, in order. I hope they re-make Karate Kid then as soon as it is released they turn around and re-make it again with the same cast but all the roles are reversed. Then they can re-edit part II to have no dialog, just the Peter Cetera song blasting at top volume while the original film is played backwards at the end of which the devil will leap from the screen and end it all finally. bigteddyt writes: on Sep 28 2007 07:09 AM some of the comments are quasi-comical, but you have to realize that WE'RE the reason everyone is doing remakes. If we didn't go see them, they'd stop making them. and this is a relatively cheap movie to make. they'll easily make a profit if it makes over $10 mill in the box office and then DVD/HDDVD/BluRay rentals and sales. Although i do not want to see it, it is a business and they will keep producing crap as long as it makes a buck. (Reply to this) |

jaredisme writes: on Sep 28 2007 07:42 AM Is there anything that they won't do? Surely a "Three Men and a Baby" remake is not far away......one can only hope that doing a "Karate Kid" movie will propel Jaden to a long and successful career like Ralph Macchio. Hey, maybe Dakota Fanning can do a remake of "The Next Karate Kid".... (Reply to this) |

BrianInSD writes: on Sep 28 2007 08:54 AM Perhaps they can bring back Ralph Macchio, still playing his original character, only now he's a karate instructor! Basically, he's assumed the Mr. Miyagi role and is passing on his gentle wisdom to a new generation! Then they can bring back William Zabka who has grown from bitter, evil, teenage bully to become head of the evil dojo. So it will be like "Karate Kid: The Next Generation!" Also, Ralph Macchio's character is married to Hillary Swank's character from The Next Karate Kid and they have two precocious children who are karate geniuses and get into all sorts of wacky adventures. Throw Jaden Smith into the mix and you've got a $300 million domestic grossing masterpiece on your hands! (Reply to this) |

zooman writes: on Sep 30 2007 12:30 AM im usually against those who idealize the past and say how things are horrible today and more commercial than ever and whatnot, but Im thinking my stand made more sense in the late ninety and into the new millenium than in these last 2-3 years when greedy producers saw that quality sequels and remakes made out of zeal actually turned out good and decided now to simply manufacture in mass and stupidly if only to use the names to make money. This year proved that people were beginning to get tired of them as many didnt do as well as expected, but they still did magnificently enough for producers to think they are appreciated, or at least to make them push down our throats (given that these movies take space in theates and limit the ease with which we can find other movies) more unspirited sequels and remakes... Ill remain a bit positive about the times saying that some good space is still being given today, more than what there was some 20 or 30 years ago in hollywood, to quality and art, even through some commercial vehicles at times... Still, in general, what is going on is sad. (Reply to this) |

In this case it's pretty much correct and would apply the same if for example, God forbid, they did an all white or indian version of Sanford and Son or Good Times. Just means they take a show that was primarily geered toward or cast with one race and switching it to another. (Reply to this) |

Travis27 writes: on Sep 30 2007 06:54 PM In the advent of Mixed Martial Arts & The Ultimate Fighting Championships, this doesn't seem relevant. Don't get me wrong, Karate is a great martial art but I don't think a Karate Kid remake will build enough excitement. A lot of people right know are training in different kinds of martial arts including exotic ones & a single martial art especially Karate which has been overdone, will not be enough to pique interest. criddic writes: on Sep 30 2007 07:37 PM Actually, families will line up to see this, since Karate is still pretty popular. Many kids learn karate and would see themselves in the Jaden Smith role. I'm not saying this is the best idea, because I think many Hollywood execs are devoid of imagination. This movie is taking the easy route to the cash. Not all remakes are bad, but it's ideas like this that give remakes a bad name. Instead of creating new characters and stories for new generations, the studios routinely back an old brand unless it's based on an already successful book or TV show. It's like all the writers today have gone into hiding and the execs are now putting in their own script bids. I bet they were all grinning at the meetings when they came up with a new Karate Kid movie. How brilliant they must be! (Reply to this) |
