Consensus: Though Jackman charms, Kate and Leopold is bland and predictable, and the time travel scenario lacks inner logic.

MEG RYAN and HUGH JACKMAN star in KATE & LEOPOLD, the story of two strangers in New York City, separated by a hundred years. When they meet, a century's worth of differences come crashing together.
Kate McKay is a modern-day executive, a 21st century woman driven to succeed in the corporate world. Leopold, the Third Duke of Albany, is a charming 19th century bachelor. Each has grown weary of waiting for love. But when a dramatic twist of fate lands Leopold in present-day New York, they must confront the prospect of a love affair 100 years in the making.
LIEV SCHREIBER (the "Scream" trilogy, "A Walk on the Moon") co-stars as Kate's genius ex-boyfriend Stuart, who discovers the portal that accidentally transports his great great grandfather Leopold from 1867 to the new millenium. Also co-starring are BRECKIN MEYER ("Go," "Roadtrip," television's "Inside Schwartz") as Kate's brother Charlie, NATASHA LYONNE ("American Pie," "Slums of Beverly Hills") as her loyal assistant Darci, and BRADLEY WHITFORD (television's "The West Wing") as J.J., Kate's boss.
KATE & LEOPOLD is directed and co-written by JAMES MANGOLD (director/co-writer of "Girl, Interrupted" and director/writer of "Cop Land"). CATHY KONRAD (producer of the "Scream" trilogy, "Girl, Interrupted," and the upcoming "The Sweetest Thing," starring Cameron Diaz) is the film's producer. -- © 2001 Miramax

Reviews for Kate and Leopold
The shabby metaphysics and complete absence of internal logic are perhaps meant to charm, but only add to the eye-gouging irritant factor.
[W]e've seen all this stuff before where the guy from the past puts on the remote control and he's frightened by television and stereo and the wacky way of the world. We've seen all that before, done. But the romance is nice.
Delivers the kind of warm, familiar mixed brew of romance, humor, light drama, and pleasant character interaction that has made many of Ryan's similar endeavors successful box office performers.
Mangold is so careless that, if you pay attention, you'll notice him giving away the ending in the first five minutes.
Cute. Funny. Charming. Romantic. Predictable. Fluffy. Recycled. Long.
The script is sweet, but not sappy, and attempts to stay within the bounds of time travel logic
What the film ... lacks most is that exhilarating leap of imagination that sweeps a viewer willingly into the realm of make-believe.
Is it just me, or does Meg Ryan look as bored as I think she does with playing the same character a gazillion times?
A thoroughly satisfying romantic comedy, informed at all times by a special wit and ardent feeling.
"You're sucking the life out of American cinema," says a market research exec to Meg Ryan's titular Kate.
As far as the acting goes, it's not a good sign when Breckin Meyer ... is the highlight of the film.
