In KENTUCKY KERNALS, the first of a pair of films that George Stevens made with the popular comedy team of Bert Wheeler and Robert Woolsey, they star as washed-up vaudevillians Willie Doyle and Elmer Dugan. After counseling a despondent man to adopt a child, the down-and-out comedians are stuck with the small boy, Spanky Milford (Spanky MacFarland), when the man elopes with his new girlfriend. They consult some lawyers and learn that the child is heir to a fortune in Kentucky. The three head for Kentucky, unaware that the Milfords have long been involved in a vicious feud with another clan, the Wakefields. Colonel Wakefield (Noah Beery Sr.) makes the trio's initial encounter with the opposing family a tense experience, but once Willie has eye balled the lovely Gloria Wakefield (Mary Carlisle), he's only to eager to try to make peace. He asks both groups to declare a temporary truce to attend a celebration at Spanky's lavish new mansion. All goes well until the boy pops a champagne cork, setting off a new round of hostilities. An entertaining romp energized by the veteran duo and a talented cast, KENTUCKY KERNALS includes the musical numbers "One Little Kiss" and "Supper Song." [More]
