On her thirteenth birthday, budding witch Kiki is in a hurry to leave her family and establish her independence. With only her talking pet cat as a companion, Kiki is attracted to the bright lights of a beautiful port city, but finds that making friends is not easy. Using her skill at riding a broom to start an express delivery service, Kiki quickly discovers that she cannot take her unique abilities for granted. The film is based on the book MAJO NO TAKKYUBIN by Eiko Kadono, a Japanese writer of children's books; the title literally means "Witch's Special Express Delivery." Like Miyazaki's MY NEIGHBOR TOTORO, KIKI is languidly paced--the better to appreciate the level of detail of the film's animation. KIKI differs from the typical "witch" film, like THE CRAFT: Kiki's abilities serve not as a symbol for evil or for ultimate power, but for the talents that lie within the reach of every girl. The film was dubbed in English by several prominent actors, including Kirsten Dunst, Phil Hartman, Janeane Garofalo, and Debbie Reynolds. [More]

  • Kiki's Delivery Service
  • Rarely does a film touch so many hearts or reach such artistic heights as the highly acclaimed KIKI'S DELIVERY SERIVCE, the magical adventure of an enterprising young girl who must follow tradition to become a full-fledged witch. Venturing out with only her chatty black cat Jiji, KiKi flies off for the adventure of a lifetime. Landing in a far-off city, she sets up a high-flying delivery service. Here begins a wonderful experience of independence and responsibility as she finds her place in the world. The breathtaking animation of the legendary Hayao Miyazaki and the star voice talents of Kirsten Dunst (KiKi), Phil Hartman (Jiji), Matthew Lawrence (Tombo), and more make KIKI'S DELIVERY SERVICE soar with an energy, excitement, and the kind of imagination that entertains again and again!

An enchanting, moving story that focuses on emotion, not action.

The animation is particularly fluid, especially in the scenes where Kiki flies over the city and along its streets.

With so much nasty and unpleasant stuff floating around in contemporary culture, something as good-natured as this comes as a surprise.

Miyazaki's suffusing kindness makes Kiki's adventures winning without being overly scary.

The gentlest and most sweet-tempered Miyazaki film I've seen -- yet it's not without the strange undercurrent of something slightly sinister that exists in all his works.

One of Miyazaki's most personable protagonists, a delightful cast of supporting characters, and a rambling, episodic story full of charming incident and irresistible imagery.

Marked by a delicious bittersweet quality as the story moves from parents losing a child to adolescence through to that child finding--and losing--first love in a strange city.
