Facing a biased jury and unfair procedure, Shango's case is taken by liberal lawyer Ernie Goodman (Alan Alda) and his activist assistant, Linda (Rose McGowan). Initially distrustful of white Ernie, self-educated and politicized Shango eventually begins to form a bond with Ernie and Linda during the time that they steadfastly champion his case.
