Written, developed and coproduced by the two up-and-comers, this clever labor of love stands for everything good and different (see: un-Meg Ryan-like) in the genre.

KISSING JESSICA STEIN: Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a lovely young conservative Jewish girl with the perfect loft situated on New York City's Upper West Side, a fun job working for a hip newspaper, and beautiful clothes. The only thing she doesn't have is the ideal boyfriend. Not that she doesn't have tons of dates: from geeky nerds to suave sexy types, Jessica is sought after by throngs of men. She just doesn't like any of the guys who like her. When her coworker, Joan (Jackie Hoffman), reads her an ad from the personals of the Village Voice, Jessica knows she's interested. Even when she realizes that the ad is in the "women seeking women" section, she figures it's worth a try. A funny, girly, prissy, very lipstick-lesbian relationship ensues with Chelsea gallery owner Helen (Heather Juergensen). When the girls aren't making out, they share makeup secrets and raid each other's closets. However, Helen's daring nymphomaniac side clashes with Jessica's conservative straight side, and the couple is forced to face some real challenges, one of which is Jessica's hilarious Scarsdale-based matchmaker mother (Tovah Feldshuh). A light, laugh-a-minute romantic comedy, KISSING JESSICA STEIN is a good fit for fans of sitcoms like ALLY MCBEAL, SEX IN THE CITY, and WILL AND GRACE. [More]

Reviews for Kissing Jessica Stein
A funny, refreshing take on the romantic comedy genre that may sidestep a few of the political issues it raises, but delivers great performances and plenty of laughs.
Westfeldt and Juergensen's wordy script tries for both mainstream and offbeat, but gets lost in between.
Three years of writing, rehearsing, and performing Jessica together helped develop the film organically for Westfeldt and Juergensen.
What makes the film break the relatively new gay-film formula is the wit and charm of the two actresses, who have written themselves some sparkling lines.
Will doubtlessly please many, so long as expectations are not more than a notch above sitcom standards.
Puts a refreshing and comical spin on the all-too-familiar saga of the contemporary single woman.
... a charming, well-acted, observant and tough-minded inquiry into the elusive nature of love.
It frustrates me that this writing team would be so satisfied with just another humdrum New York romancer.
Packed with sharp, intelligent dialogue about relationships, sexuality, art, family, careers and maturing.
Witty dialog between realistic characters showing honest emotions. It's touching and tender and proves that even in sorrow you can find humor. Like blended shades of lipstick, these components combine into one terrific story with lots of laughs.
The people in Jessica are so recognizable and true that, as in real life, we're never sure how things will work out.
As we often do with these kinds of movies, we mostly sit there thinking, “Nobody talks like this.”
Revives a genre that's been listing badly, infusing it with wit and intelligence and a welcome shot of indie energy.
Kissing Jessica Stein is your standard romantic comedy, only better: Twice the chicks and half the guys.
Director Charles Herman-Wurmfeld's movie knows what it wants, what its limits are, and delivers its delights accordingly.
