KISSING JESSICA STEIN: Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a lovely young conservative Jewish girl with the perfect loft situated on New York City's Upper West Side, a fun job working for a hip newspaper, and beautiful clothes. The only thing she doesn't have is the ideal boyfriend. Not that she doesn't have tons of dates: from geeky nerds to suave sexy types, Jessica is sought after by throngs of men. She just doesn't like any of the guys who like her. When her coworker, Joan (Jackie Hoffman), reads her an ad from the personals of the Village Voice, Jessica knows she's interested. Even when she realizes that the ad is in the "women seeking women" section, she figures it's worth a try. A funny, girly, prissy, very lipstick-lesbian relationship ensues with Chelsea gallery owner Helen (Heather Juergensen). When the girls aren't making out, they share makeup secrets and raid each other's closets. However, Helen's daring nymphomaniac side clashes with Jessica's conservative straight side, and the couple is forced to face some real challenges, one of which is Jessica's hilarious Scarsdale-based matchmaker mother (Tovah Feldshuh). A light, laugh-a-minute romantic comedy, KISSING JESSICA STEIN is a good fit for fans of sitcoms like ALLY MCBEAL, SEX IN THE CITY, and WILL AND GRACE. [More]

Its boldness comes across with such subtly that you're scarcely aware of it until it hits you in the face.

So irresistibly funny and likable that its lack of depth is easily forgiven.

Nothing earth-shattering but certainly entertaining to watch for the most part.

Everything is pegged into the groove of a New York dating comedy with 'issues' to simplify.

Herman-Wurmfeld's film poses all of these questions with insight and humor but suffers from the disappointing feeling that it could have been so much better.

It frustrates me that this writing team would be so satisfied with just another humdrum New York romancer.

This is a pleasant, sometimes very funny film which manages to explore some interesting topics.

It's funny and human and really pretty damned wonderful, all at once.

There are some really wonderful moments that build beautifully, chronicling the pitfalls in bringing old baggage, traditional family and romantic love under the same roof.

Throws in enough clever and unexpected twists to make the formula feel fresh.

The people in Jessica are so recognizable and true that, as in real life, we're never sure how things will work out.

Revives a genre that's been listing badly, infusing it with wit and intelligence and a welcome shot of indie energy.

The film's desire to be liked sometimes undermines the possibility for an exploration of the thornier aspects of the nature/nurture argument in regards to homosexuality.
