Written, developed and coproduced by the two up-and-comers, this clever labor of love stands for everything good and different (see: un-Meg Ryan-like) in the genre.

KISSING JESSICA STEIN: Jessica Stein (Jennifer Westfeldt) is a lovely young conservative Jewish girl with the perfect loft situated on New York City's Upper West Side, a fun job working for a hip newspaper, and beautiful clothes. The only thing she doesn't have is the ideal boyfriend. Not that she doesn't have tons of dates: from geeky nerds to suave sexy types, Jessica is sought after by throngs of men. She just doesn't like any of the guys who like her. When her coworker, Joan (Jackie Hoffman), reads her an ad from the personals of the Village Voice, Jessica knows she's interested. Even when she realizes that the ad is in the "women seeking women" section, she figures it's worth a try. A funny, girly, prissy, very lipstick-lesbian relationship ensues with Chelsea gallery owner Helen (Heather Juergensen). When the girls aren't making out, they share makeup secrets and raid each other's closets. However, Helen's daring nymphomaniac side clashes with Jessica's conservative straight side, and the couple is forced to face some real challenges, one of which is Jessica's hilarious Scarsdale-based matchmaker mother (Tovah Feldshuh). A light, laugh-a-minute romantic comedy, KISSING JESSICA STEIN is a good fit for fans of sitcoms like ALLY MCBEAL, SEX IN THE CITY, and WILL AND GRACE. [More]

Reviews for Kissing Jessica Stein
... a charming, well-acted, observant and tough-minded inquiry into the elusive nature of love.
Westfeldt and Juergensen exude a chemistry and comfort level that's both saucy and endearing.
... for an American film it is a groundbreaker in exploring the realm of sexual fluidity, and it does so with wit, wisdom and in a completely entertaining fashion.
Laugh-out-loud lines, adorably ditsy but heartfelt performances, and sparkling, bittersweet dialogue that cuts to the chase of the modern girl's dilemma.
Will doubtlessly please many, so long as expectations are not more than a notch above sitcom standards.
The costarring screenwriters not only have an ear for dialogue, they work their affinity for language into their plot
This comedy of manners and romance is a charmer that should have broad cross-over appeal to audiences, gay and straight.
Every once in a while, a movie comes out of nowhere to kick up your spirits.
A very funny, lively, upbeat film about sexual confusion among the relationship-challenged.
Without resorting to hyperbole, I can state that Kissing Jessica Stein may be the best same-sex romance I have seen.
Puts a refreshing and comical spin on the all-too-familiar saga of the contemporary single woman.
This is not an outstanding film, but certainly parts of it work very well.
