The first-time directors previously penned the screenplay Rounders, and while their attention to setting and detail in both films is commendable, their development of character and storyline could stand some improvement.
No better or worse than 'Truth or Consequences, N.M.' or any other interchangeable actioner with imbecilic Mafia toolbags botching a routine assignment in a Western backwater.
Koppelman and Levien manage nice camaraderie among their young thugs, but most of the characters are too bland, repugnant or dunderheaded -- in some cases, all three -- for viewers to invest much emotional interest.
Perhaps if co-directors David Levien and Brian Koppelman had spent more time devising a coherent vision for the film, we would not have felt as knocked around after watching it.
Far and away the best thing in Knockaround Guys is Vin Diesel. Now, that's pretty sobering.
A dimwitted Mafia melodrama that fails even as a guilty pleasure.

We know the plot's a little crazy, but it held my interest from start to finish.
Top CriticI've had more interesting -- and, dare I say, thematically complex -- bowel movements than this long-on-the-shelf, point-and-shoot exercise in gimmicky crime drama.

The sad thing about Knockaround Guys is its lame aspiration for grasping the coolness vibes when in fact the film isn’t as flippant or slick as it thinks it is.
The script is uneven; one of the subplots even disappears without a trace. Luckily, the charismatic cast and the film’s adequate sense of humor and style are enough to hold an audience’s interest for 90 minutes.
This wannabe wiseguy comedy/drama reaps Vin Diesel's astounding "XXX" popularity but it has little credibility or pace. It's a goodfellas knock-off that rolls with the punches.

It doesn't know where to go with all of this attitude and so it winds up going exactly where you'd expect.
This one is not nearly as dreadful as expected. In fact, it's quite fun in places.
Tom Noonan is great as the sheriff, and his scenes with John Malkovich are the best in the movie.
Will only satisfy those who can't tell the difference between the good, the bad and the ugly.
