This British film from 1978 stars Judi Dench as Imogen Lagrishe, an aristocratic landowner, and Jeremy Irons as Otto Beck, a struggling intellectual, who fall into a passionate love affair that tests the limits of Langrishe's relationship with her sisters and Beck's dedication to his studies. Based on the novel by Aidan Higgins, with a screenplay from Harold Pinter, LANGRISHE, GO DOWN originally played on BBC television, but was never released in theaters. LANGRISHE, GO DOWN showcases early, detailed performances by Dench and Irons as lovers who struggle to keep their emotions in check with their intellects. The careful pace and witty dialogue from Pinter allow these two future award winners to bring the power and style of the British theatrical tradition to the screen. [More]

  • In 1930s Dublin, German scholar Otto Peck (Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons, Reversal of Fortune) plunges into a torrid love affair with Imogen Langrishe (Academy Award-winner Judi Dench, Shakespeare in Love), a fading flower of the English noble class living in a decadent family plantation with her sisters. Written by and featuring acclaimed playwright Harold Pinter (Betrayal), this delicate and moving tale of secret love, directed by David Hugh Jones (84 Charing Cross Road), features two of England's greatest actors at their finest.

The screenplay is so very Pinter as to be positively painful.

Imogen and Otto's happenstance affair holds little intrigue or surprise.

A movie that looks like a muddy second-generation Xerox and contains all the emotional and intellectual appeal of cold tea and soggy toast.

The story is a muted melodrama made strange and haunting by the manner of its telling.

The fragmented storytelling is, well, vintage Pinter, but Ms. Dench and Mr. Irons remain mesmerizing after all this time.

There's something haunting about the airlessness and lethargy of this tucked-away corner of the world.

The spectacle of two such ferocious actors going at it in the context of a complex, thoughtful drama makes this one worth going down for.

A flinty-eyed portrait of romantic naïveté and predatory narcissism that would likely have continued to gather dust in the archives if not for its retroactive star power.
