Weekly Ketchup: Lara Croft, He-Man returning to theaters
by Greg Dean Schmitz | January 30, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

This week, after spending some time in Utah hitting the slopes and pretending to care about independent filmmaking, Hollywood got right back in the groove, doing what they do best: greenlighting prequels, sequels, remakes and reboots. Of this week's top 10 stories, only three movies don't fit into one of those categories. Back to Article

"Ghost Rider" was so bad, it was good. Bad acting, bad dialouge, horrible visual effects, and stupid action. And I laughed out loud through out most of it.

Oh goodie, a "Tomb Raider", "A-Team", and "He-Man" movies. This just peachy.

I'm rather pissed off that they think they can pull off an adaption of "The A-Team" without staying consistent with the legendary TV series. It was excellent, campy fun, with awesome actors just hamming it up every week. The humor was good, the cast had chemistry, and it was just plain fun. I'm afraid all the wrong people are involved in this film; "The A-Team" needs someone who has a serious understanding of camp.

Lara Croft... well, I'm not sure it needs a reboot. I'm not sure it needs a movie. You give me a solid story, though, with a high concept, it may be worth a $9.00 ticket.

He-Man... nothing to say for that. I know the original film was crap, but I never watched any of the material. Moving on.

Ghost Rider 2... I'm going to venture a "No", just based on my ideals and taste. I never saw the original, but I'm guessing it was no masterpiece.

1066... I'm going to venture a "Yes"! It sounds like it could be excellent, as long as it strives to be as original in execution as possible.

It looks like they're doing all the wrong things with The Thing prequel. We know everything that happened. They dug up a space ship, uncovered an alien, one guy slit his wrists, a Dog-thing got away, and the whole place blew up and burned down. There's nothing new they could really do. It's just going to be an exact copy of John Carpenter's movie with Norwegians. If anything I'd rather they adapt the game into a movie. Plus I have no confidence in a director that's only done commercials. I mean, I wouldn't trust the ooVoo guy to make a Star Trek flick or the director of the Billy Mays infomercials to do a Terminator. Everyone starts somewhere but they have to build themselves up. Make small TV/indie movies where they're going to make the mistakes they certainly will. Then when they got a grip on how it goes then try to please fans.

I'm sure plenty will disagree with me, but I thought Ghost Rider was pretty decent. I didn't care for it much in theaters but I saw the director's cut on DVD and then went out and bought it. I'm looking forward to the sequel.

What a strange combination for the A-Team movie. Ridley Scott, Joe Carnahan, and Skip "Couldn't Write A Good Script To Save His Life" Woods? Scott is great, and Carnahan at least has Narc under his belt, but why is this bag of douche writing the movie. After Hitman, you would think people would pay him to stay away from a keyboard. It almost makes me anxious to see the cast.

I have some interest in the A-Team and The Thing prequel, but 1066: The Battle of hastings (my title) could be really, really good.

"pretending to care about independent filmmaking"... "imagine all that, but with maybe cyborgs or zombies or something".

lol great stuff!

It just occurred to me that He-Man ("By the Power of Grayskull!") is really just a big rip-off of Shazam!/Captain Marvel.

Megan Fox is younger - I guess that equals hotter.

LOL I disagree. I would totally choose Jolie over Fox. The fact that Jolie is older even turns me on (sorry to those be disgusted), I mean I am younger and the idea of getting with an older woman is awesome. Also whats the big deal with Megan Fox, she is only big because she is hot. Like she has been in Transformers, thats it. Do we even know she is a good actor, she just had to play hot in Transformers which comes easy to her. I would totally choose Jolie, she is a classic beauty babe.

A Tomb Raider sequel holds promise. I could see it doing well with the right type of script and acting.

He-Man....Oh man what to say. The toys were all well and good and heck, even a kids show in the 80's is alright! But if you are going to try to make it into a serious flick, you simple can't have the name "He-Man" and be taken seriously. The first movie was complete fodder for Mystery Science Theatre 3000 and it pains me to see that it never got the riff it deserved! (Mike, if you read this, PLEASE riff it so that I may get it on rifftrax.com!) Nuff said about that movie that will be laughable at best.

A Ghost Rider 2? Eh. I don't think it could get any worse than the first one (which while by no means good) wasn't terrible. I enjoyed it for the time that I watched it but I wouldn't buy it. Just another popcorn flick to pass the time. I'd see it, but only if I can for free. :)

Rebooting 'Tomb Raider', which isn't even 7 years old yet, is a bad idea.

If they are actually going to do it, I suggest casting Kate Beckinsale as Lara Croft.

I don't know who I want for Lara Croft, but I know who I DON'T want: Angelina Jolie and Megan Fox. Both are not that hot. And Lara Croft is the ultimate male fantasy. So get me somebody really really hot, dammit! (Megan Fox? Sure, she is sexy, for the first 15 minutes. After that? Another plain face with a hot body)

For Tintin, I higly doubt Red Rackam's Treasure will be the next movie. I think instead that the first movie will be the Secret of the Unicorn/Red Rackam Treasure story arc (I don't think you have enough for 90-120 minute movie in Secret of the Unicorn alone). Peter Jackson's movie? I'm betting the Aztec storyline (don,t know the books' names n English, sorry) or even the "Island" one, with the big gorilla. Or maybe one with Rastapopoulos (Tintin arch-nemesis, voiced by Robert DeNiro please!!!)

Yeah I agree. She was the most recognizable Lara Croft model, maybe not the first but the one I remember best.
She would be almost perfect for it.
Kate Beckinsale probably be my second choice.
I have a third but don't remember who it is.
But they better make it alot closer to the game than they have.
Maybe use one of the plots from the game(just not Angel of Darkness), and all could be good.

Lol @ adolescent dweebs who couldn't get Fiona the green troll to look at them twice saying that Megan Fox or Angelina Jolie aren't hot. Hey, I used to touch myself to 99 cent movies from the horror aisle back when, so I understand the mindset by which you only value movies based on their potential as softcore porn, but you have no grounds to say these women are unattractive. Feel free to state your opinions, who you find attractive, but don't try to demean these people by saying *they* are not 'hot'.

Guys go to slashfilm immediately! There is a f^cking awesome Transformers 2 ad that completely changed my thoughts on how Transformers 2 will be. It looks pretty awesome, and bigger and better the first. I just hope they have a better story this time. There is also a Star Trek ad which still makes me think its going to be awesome. Sounds like a good story and looks like a **** load of fun, so it will probably be a more memorable movie this summer. Also there is a GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra ad. It looks insanely over the top with cheesy dialogue... AND I LIKE IT! It looks fun and not terrible like I expected. I love world domination story lines, and in the ad the frickking bad guy has an underground layer! How cool is that! Plus there is going to be an under water battle! It looks fun, and right now I am not going to say its definitely going to be good like Star Trek but I will say it gets my hopes up more. Sienna Miller looks HOT!

HOLY SH.IT! Ok ok. Geek moment over. So I watched both ads. I've gotta say, G.I. Joe is looking a million times better than I thought it would. So does Transformers. One thing I noticed about the dude that jumps through the building, front rolls, then transforms into a sports car; I think that might be... (wait for it)... Wheeljack. Take a close look, freeze frame. It's something about his face.

Oh, and fu.ck McG. lol. Michael Bay just b1tch slapped him.

Okay, I'm a dirty young man. But Helen Miren's got class, and class is sexy.

Anyway, as far as "Star Trek" and "Transformers 2" go, you say I hope they have a better story this time. And I still have no idea why anyone would expect a good plot from a movie adapted from a comic book, adapted from a animated series, based on action figures. I had a lot of fun with the first, I liked it a lot more than I thought I would. I found Shia LeBeouf's character likable and a lot more relatable than the evil summer dork *cough Peter Parker cough*. I plan on seeing th second hopefully it's opening night.
And "Star Trek" looks good, I'm a huge fan of the "Star Trek" franshice in general. I've even seen that elusive animated series. (Yes, there was a cartoon show.) I doubt the new film will be as good as "Wrath of Khan" or "First Contact", but it dosen't have to be. I say it should be about as good as "Search for Spock", and I'd be satisfied. I doubt this summer will be as good as 2008's, but it should be better than 2007's.

The first Tintin movie WILL be both "Secret of the Unicorn" and "Red Rackham's Treasure" combined into one. It was one of the few two-parters that Herge wrote.

Herge actually wrote two other two-part stories: "Seven Crystal Balls/Prisoners of the Sun" and "Destination: Moon/Explorers on the Moon." That first one (PotS) is most likely to be Peter Jackson's project. The moon story arc is likely to be a third, but I don't know if the story in that one would work for a movie. It's very dated and inaccurate, considering that it was written before man actually landed on the moon.

Personally, I think they'd be better off fleshing out one of the other shorter stories for the third movie like "The Crab with the Golden Claws" or "Tintin in Tibet."

I found Shia really relatable in the first 2 hours, then I didn't find him relatable at all in the last 30 minutes when he becomes an action hero. Also that I probably wont have a problem with in the sequel because we already know he is an action hero. I also wont have a problem with Megan Fox playing a high school junior, that made me puzzled during Transformers. Also there is great mythology to comic books and hell even animated series, so I think its easy to have a good story. I like the story of the new Star Trek but I just hope it doesn't get dumbed down with all the explosions, but I dont think JJ will allow that to happen. For Transformers 2 I like the ad a lot actually and it looks bigger and better to Transformers. I like the plot, it sounds like a cool story. GI Joe, yes I expect to be incredibly dumb but fun like the first Transformers. Yeah I don't think this summer will be as good as '08 because that had movies with brains and there were so many memorable movies- TDK, WALL-e, HB II, Tropic Thunder, Iron Man. '07 sucked- Die Hard 4= ok but disappointing, S3= we all know how it turned out, Pirates 3= not good. Superbad was the only really good movie of summer of '07 also Sunshine and Rescue Dawn but nobody saw those that summer. Wolverine looks ok, Star Trek looks good, T4 I think will be pretty good if McG actually knows what he is doing, Up will be great, Transformers 2 I think will be better then the first, Public Enemies will be great, GI JOE will be dumb fun at the most. So there may be a few really good movies but I doubt it, I think Up and Public Enemies are the real shoe ins to be great. Man I just went on a long rant.

Well, "Ratatouille" came in 2007. And I liked "Pirates 3" to be honest, I hated "Spider-Man 3", I don't think I've had such feelings of hatred since "Batman & Robin". I have no idea why I bothered to watch the undeniabley horrible "Evan Almighty". For the most part yeah, 2007 sucked. The only bad special effect in "Transformers" is that Megan Fox is allegedly a High School Student. Instead she looks like a stripper. But I liked "Ratatouille", "Pirates 3", and "Transformers", so it wasn't a total waste.

I don't know about "Public Enemies", I'll have to look into that. I'm a little worried that "Star Trek" will be too much of a CW misubderstood teens type thing, but maybe the advertisement's are misleading. I'd see "X-Men Orgins: Wolerine", "Transformers 2", "Star Trek", "Up", "Terminator Slavation", "Harry Potter 6", and "Bruno". It can easily be better than 2007.

Yeah Ratatouille was awesome but I thought Pirates 3 made no sense. Public Enemies is the Michael Mann movie about John Dillinger and its with Johhny Depp & Christian Bale. So I actually think this Summer is going to be as good, I think there will be one or two actual great movies this summer plus some fun ones. Also I still cant decide whether Harold Raimis's Year One and Land of the Lost, I am just not sure yet. I just love how much sci fi there is next summer- Star Trek, T4, Transformers, and you can call GI Joe sci fi I think.

However, From What I've Been Reading About It and From What I've Seen In The Teaser Trailer, I'm Very Let Down. Why did They Give A Movie Like That To Stephan Sommers? Haven't They Seen Any Of His Movie's? And Did Anyone Check Out That Picture Of Cobra Commander? When Did He Ever Have A Monacle? And When Was He Ever Referred To As The Doctor? I Know Someone Who Was...Wasn't He Called Dr. Mindbender? Why On Earth Would They Make A Change Like That? Did They Think No One Above 4years Old Ever Watched The Damn Cartoon Or Read The Comics?
