Intrepid British archaeologist Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) has made perhaps the most important archaeological discovery in history: an orb that leads to the mythical Pandora's Box. Unfortunately, the orb falls into the hands of Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds), an evil scientist who deals in killer viruses and hopes to sell the secrets of the box as the ultimate weapon. Recruited by British Intelligence to get the orb back from Reiss, Lara enlists Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a British marine turned mercenary--and her former love interest--to help. The two embark on an adventure that spans continents in an attempt to regain the orb. Lara is a walking advertisement for "girl power." She's brilliant, athletic, courageous, and saucy. She flips jet skis, parachutes to safety from tall buildings, dives, rides horses--nothing seems beyond her. Best of all, Lara is one of the good ones--she'll do whatever she must to keep the world safe. Directed by Jan de Bont, this film was shot on location in Greece, Kenya, Hong Kong, England, and Wales. With movies of this sort becoming as prevalent as they are, there has to be more than just expensive looking stunts on display.

More Indiana Jones than James Bond, Lara Croft does better this time around with exotic locales and an almost down-to-earth story.

Another sequel cashing in on its pre-sold audience without providing anything by way of sparkle, wit or originality.

For a movie based on a video game, the story is as far-fetched and the characters as one-dimensional as one might expect.

While there's compelling evidence that Angelina Jolie is a real person, you'd never guess it watching Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle Of Life.

More like a Cradle of Tedium, and despite the high-decibel sound and fury, you may wish you had brought a pillow.

Without sacrificing velocity, de Bont gives us a clean, watchable film, with some exciting sequences.

She may be playing yet another (so-called) empowered woman in yet another film made for teenage boys, but you get the impression that Jolie is far too intimidating and too womanly to fit into their pathetic little fantasies.

There are levels of acceptable stupidity in summer movies, but I'm afraid Lara Croft too often dips below the line.

Tedious, clunky and, for the big budget and all the exotic locales, surprisingly chintzy-looking.

The best thing about Cradle of Life? It's a whole half-hour shorter than Bad Boys II.

'Tomb Braider' is able to leap from tall buildings, jump a motorcycle off the Great Wall of China, flip a speeding jet ski, and trick-shoot while riding sidesaddle - all without messing up her hair.

The storytellers behind The Cradle of Life concentrate mostly on transportation: the best parts of the movie depict our heroes getting from place to place.

Uninvolving and formulaic, spiced up in the stretch with a couple of CGI (and looking every bit like it) Tree Hulk-type monsters.
