Last Chance Harvey is a pleasant if predictable romance. We need more romantic films featuring middle-aged couples.

With a warning from his boss (Richard Schiff) to not bother rushing back, Harvey goes to London, begrudgingly, for his daughter's wedding, fielding that work calls the whole time he's there. When Harvey greets his estranged daughter, Susie (Liane Balaban), it becomes clear just how far away he's grown from his family. The film never spells out in exactly what ways Harvey was a bad father, but it is clear he missed the boat when Susie asks her stepfather (James Brolin) to give her away. As Harvey leaves his heartbreak at the ceremony for an emergency work call, he misses his flight and gets fired. While nursing a whiskey at the airport bar, Harvey bumps into Kate (Emma Thompson), an airport employee escaping her own bad day with a glass of wine and a book. Suddenly taken by Kate's British charm, a tipsy Harvey bombards her with tales of his trouble. This unlikely trading of sob stories leads to lunch, a walk around London, and a day of unexpected romance. Thompson is charming as Kate, a lonely middle-age woman struggling to deal with her mother's constant prying into her life. Despite not having had the best of luck in romance, Kate is an optimist at heart, and it's this spark for life that attracts Harvey and ultimately helps repair his image in his daughter's eyes. Never showy or too ambitious, Joel Hopkins's slow-paced romance twists old clichés to suit a more adult audience. While not groundbreaking in its plot, LAST CHANCE HARVEY is saved by great performances from the always-solid Hoffman and the incredibly charming Thompson, who makes an otherwise familiar story feel fresh. Reviews for Last Chance Harvey
Hoffman and Thompson make it sublime, a genuinely pleasant 90 minutes spent with two thoroughly engaging characters.
Hoffman and Thompson are each good enough to bring out a glow in the other.
I was expecting a grand film, with fireworks and bells, but was disappointed to say the least.
Charming and sentimental, delightful celebrating the hope for midlife love.
The nightingale of mature romance sings a haiku tune for Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson in a good-spirited romantic comedy that worthy of their naturalistic performances.
If nothing else, Last Chance Harvey proves that you're never too old to be the subject of a zany trying-on-dresses montage, but considering the prestige of its leads, that's a minor victory at best.
Mr. Hoffman, now past 70, and Ms. Thompson, inching toward 50, still retain enough buoyancy to keep the picture afloat. And the rest of the cast kicks in with flawless ensemble support.
Entirely satisfying, and a perfectly worthy use of 100 minutes. There are points in life when it does not do to ask any more of a film than this.
There’s something irresistible about watching two people fall in love, even in contrived, sniffle- and sometimes gag-inducing films like Last Chance Harvey.
Last Chance Harvey is a good chance to see two superb actors having their way with wafer-thin material.
A gentle, modern-day love story for those who believe it's never too late to find romance. Good idea, but even such consummate pros as Dustin Hoffman and Emma Thompson can't make it soar.
Plays like a bad Kate Hudson romantic comedy, but with much better actors.
This love story is entertaining despite Hoffman's excruciating acting in the pickup scene and the film's rampant derivativity.
Falling in love can happen at any age. 'Last Chance Harvey' emphasizes this romantic theme while having a bit of fun doing it.
Why is it when these movies star women, they're relegated to Lifetime, but when a man's problems helm the ship, they're immediate Oscar contenders?
We want the characters to help us sigh dreamily while the credits roll. Harvey provides that plus relatable emotion, endearing comedy, and stellar acting.
An appealing romantic drama that proves it is never too late to turn your life around by taking a risky leap into the dark.
