Critic Review - New York Magazine

The Last Samurai is an idyll in which the savageries of existence are transcended by spiritual devotion. That's a beautiful dream, and it gives the film a deep pleasingness, but the fullness of life and its blackest ambiguities are sacrificed.

Finally, a critic who doesn't have his head stuck in his ass. I can't believe so many people seem blind to the amount of emotion and beauty present in this film. This is Cruise and Watanabe at their finest, and the directing makes an already extraordinary film, phenomenal.

This movie (among other things Japanese) has changed my attitude toward the world. There's something to be marveled about the Japanese culture's demonstration of honor, discipline, and strive toward perfection that makes this film succeed beyond all others.
