It's a film at war with itself. Worse, it's a mixed bag of carefully packaged entertainment, with little room for spontaneity or surprise.
Yet another reviewer who misses the point and significance of the clash of traditonal Japan and Western modernisation, the honor and beauty inherent in the traditional Japanese warrior code Budo, lends itself to emotional performances, thus Cruise did well. I suspect you're yet another pretentious pseudo-critic poisoned with political correctness and can't get over the fact that Cruise a caucasian was the main character. It's fiction so get over it, it wasn't about Cruise, it was about Japan.
