Whatever. The guy once rented a Chevy pickup truck for his campaign because he thought it would give him more appeal. That's right, he rented it. He's a phony.

I'm pretty sure that he'll nab not only the nomination, but the presidency if everybody stares at the Iron Eagle 3 poster for a few minutes....

Actually, the plane in Die Hard 2 crashed and burned, much as I hope/imagine Thompson's campaign will.

Good point: Republicans don't like Harry Potter, which is why there are so many "Republicans For Voldemort" campaign bumper stickers around. Who would vote for Voldemort unless they wanted Harry Potter dead?

I think you missed the point. Here's a quote from another article on the subject:

"Seated in the audience is a childhood friend of mine....My friend stands talking with her colleagues as the senator is driven away by a blond, all-American staffer. A few minutes later, my friend gets into her car to head home. As she pulls up to the stop sign at the parking lot exit, rolling up to the intersection is Senator Thompson, now behind the wheel of a sweet silver luxury sedan. He gives my friend a slight nod as he drives past. Turning onto the main road, my friend passes the school's small, side parking area. Lo and behold: There sits the abandoned red pickup, along with the all-American staffer." - The Washington Monthly, May 7, 2007.

The point is that the image he uses to look like a populist, is fake. Just like George W. Bush's attempts to look like a religious populist are fake, as he's really a rich guy who grew up in Massachusetts.

Is it just me, or is the presidential elecation turning more and more into sixth grade student council elections? Polititians hold as much power as their name can contain. All a president does is put a character to the country and shoulder all the blame. Anyone who wants power should not be allowed it. Cause they must be insane if they want it.

They probably were saying the same thing in 1980, but that turned out OK, but I think you're right. I think the best thing would be if McCain or one of the other moderates could somehow pull out a win, but that probably won't happen because we're all sheep and feel the need to define ourselves by political labels so noone who walks less than a rigid party line has a chance. Right now I have my preferences McCain, Guiliani, Obama, but the latter two'll probably change when I actually start listening to debates and taking an interest around January.

I think someone suggested that a while ago...who was that?...Oh yeah, the guys who wrote the Constitution. Seriously I love people who use the Constitution when it benefits them, then want nothing to do with it or our any other of the cornerstones our country was built on when it doesn't...or maybe I just missed the amendment that encouraged assassinations of Presidents we didn't personally vote for.

Fred Thompson is one of the few Republicans that has been remarkably consistent in his message and voting career as a US Senator. Since he's largely conservative, he'll have a hard time convincing moderate and liberal Americans that he's the right person for the job as President of the United States.

I had the opportunity to meet then-Senator Thompson a few years back. He was kind, sincere, and gosh-darn tall!

I doubt that I'll vote for him, though. I've had enough of Conservative brow-beating over irrelevant issues. Although, if he does win, I think we could do a lot worse. In the end, he's a good candidate.

I just hope that we can get someone in the White House that will fight for the rights and equality of ALL Americans. Will Thompson do that? Not very likely. Alas, politics is politics.

At least Die Hard 2: Die Harder was a decent movie. So was The Hunt for Red October.

Um, just so you know. Conservatives have been in charge for the past 6&1/2 years and it sure seems like we're going to hell in a handbasket. If Dems had been in charge and we had run the US into the ground like you Repubs have, then you'd have a valid argument. As it is, you are an idiot.

This is what really annoys me about Partisan politics. In your case Liberal Democrats, but could just as easily be Conservative Republicans...The seeming perverse joy you seem to get by the world "going to hell in a handbasket". Does it make you feel good that things are going poorly just because it allows you to be right for naysaying? Republicans need to learn the meaning of the word compromise and Democrats need to get off their asses and stop cherrypicking every little thing that's wrong and start coming up with solutions for how to make things right. Seriously, it seems like all you need to be a politician in this country is perfect 20/20 hindsight. Get over yourselves, stop knocking how piss poor the other guy is, start doing something right yourself and then maybe you can criticize and expect people to listen to you. Also lets not forget unfortunately this govt is a two party system and both parties have done more than their share to get us into this mess by being at each others throats so much nothing worthwhile gets accomplished.

The Presidency is more of a directional and public speaking role, a majority of work done by a government is atypically by a cabinet of officials put there by the President. As such, you really do want charismatic leaders in office for public speaking, meetings with foreign officials and camera appeal.

Bush, when he was elected the first time, was the laid back, easy going guy. Someone you could have a beer with. Shortly after, things got a lot more serious and that well meaning bumpkin thing kinda lost its appeal. Hilary Clinton has very little public appeal or charisma, but Obama is an absolutely great speaker and Thompson has had enough acting experience, for better or worse, to give him equal camera charisma. As for his credentials, beyond acting he also served on the board of inquiry following the Watergate scandal with Nixon. Unlike Arnold, he actually has had some politics prior his big screen debut.

As Gore and Kerry both proved, charisma is absolutely essential in the race for the presidency. Actors have it. And I have no doubt, all attention in the Republican Party will swiftly focus on Thompson and broadcast stations such as Fox News will give him plenty of air time. Altogether, if you're a fan of the Democratic party, this news is pretty bad. Prior this, the Republicans had very few good leading men beyond McCain.

I for one, am rooting for Obama. His public speaking is absolutely incredible and I think his political ideas, while radical, could be a step in the right direction if tempered just a little bit by a good cabinet and Vice President.

1. Umm Bush grew up in Texas, but was born in Massachusetts. Get your facts straight.

2. By the way, what evidence do you have that Republicans don't like entertainment or Harry Potter, people?

3. No, 9/11 didn't happen on Clinton's watch, but the planning for it did. Along with several attacks on our interests, there were signs of trouble. 9/11 happened just 8 months into Bush's first term.

4. Thompson doesn't strike me as the candidate Republicans should nominate in 2008. He will likely lose if he is the nominee. I suggest Rudy Giuliani is the man they want.
