Too much of the same thing torpedoes this potent essay on human rights in Israeli occupied Palestine.

Because of her rootlessness, Soraya becomes sympathetic even though she flirts with disaster at every turn.

Follows the passionate journey of a Palestinian American determined to return to her obliterated ancestral roots. And defiantly claim her own nonexistent right to the law of return limited only to all Jews around the world wishing to resettle in Israel.

Ultimately, in a film that highlights the physical barriers - walls, roadblocks, armed guards - that keep Palestinians where the Israelis want them, the film's biggest barrier is the one Jacir erects between Soraya and the viewer.

[An] impassioned, but wearisomely didactic, diaspora drama.

Soraya's rebellious bursts of rage come off more like the tantrums of a spoiled princess than the legitimate anger of an emerging activist.

Just as the film finds its graceful footing, it succumbs again to heavy-handedness.
