Go to see it, then judge. Sometimes it is good to exercise the human capacity to empathize with our fellow humans -- it is part of being alive.

The movie will be nominated for best make up and most likely win. It will also probably get a best picture nominee just because.

It was bad. I checked my watch at least 10 times. People may want to like it, but if they are honest, they will tell you it was tedious and pretentious.

He didn't join the Black Panthers. He joined his son at a protest against apartheid which happened roughly 15 years after the Panthers hey-day.

Do you honestly believe that Eugene Allen (the real Butler who served 7 U.S. presidents) as portrayed as Cecil Gaines in the movie "The Butler" by Forest Whitaker ... actually resigned after thirty years in the White House to join the Black Panthers? This was supposed to be based on a true story, but I cannot believe that to be factual for a second.
Yes, I did see the movie. I think it is a great cinematic production and it will probably get several awards ... deservedly so. I'm glad I saw it, but it did take considerable liberty with the truth in a number of places to serve its own agenda.

Huh? If you saw the movie you would know he didn't resign to join Black Panther party. No where close to what happened.

huh? The director admits to this being a fictional story. You know what fictional means, right?

I'm very interested in seeing how the civil rights movement might have played out in black families. As part of that generation, I know how difficult it was for white families--activist children skirmishing with their Greatest Generation parents. I'm hoping this movie will at least suggest how the upheavals of this time weren't just about the great figures and events, but how families and communities dealt with great social changes that were often violently contested and opposed.

Sounds like this film is a lot like The Help. A mostly average movie that's elevated by powerful performances. That along with its subject material makes for what could be crowd-pleasing hit, just like The Help. Hopefully it only gets the acting nominations it deserves and doesn't nab Best Picture or Best Director nominations from better films.

This thing looks legitimately awful. Oprah can die in a fucking ditch.

critics will love it despite its corniness and heavy-handed methods because it deals with black oppression. Guaranteed to be a critics darling

The rating is dropping currently, I am hoping it drops more because I am tired of lazy Oscar contenders (Ironic to say that but true)
Aug 15 - 03:08 PM
It could be, but considering Lee Daniels brought out an Oscar winning performance from Mo'nique. So this could might work.

He is directing

Interesting presidential choices too

There's an 84% so far, so I'm taking a shot at seeing this.

I completely disagree with you. And I don't believe in "sentimental" films all that much unless it really is. Forrest Gump was considered sentimental and won the Oscar for Best Picture.
Aug 13 - 09:49 AM
Forrest Gump was created, this takes all the Oscar nominating cliches (star-studded cast (which isn't a proper cast for the movie), sentimental and heartwarming story, biopic, feel-good)
I expect good performances but the consensus serves exactly what I thought, it's a weak script and direction but is only liked because of the cast and the fact the reviewers are to scared to possibly dislike an oscar contender.
Aug 14 - 09:26 AM
I'm betting it's a good film that is ultimately forgettable and not very impactful because of its unabashed and unsharpened sentimentality that clouds what could be some really good critical thinking.

Although I completely see where youre coming from

I still cant imagine this film being rotten though, Im thinking it stays above 70 percent
You are SO right.
