Silly Japanese flick to cash in on the dinosaur hype and a rip off of Jaws.

Few movies have left me utterly astounded by their inability to do anything right. This is one such film. Certainly, the film's concept is not bad at all--a Plesiosaur and a Rhamphorynchus revive and go on a rampage in a modern day lake at the base of "modern day" Mount Fuji. Unfortunately, beyond that concept nothing goes right. The acting is acceptable, but the characters are hardly engaging. The plot makes no sense and proceeds at an agonizingly slow crawl. the music is not only godawful jazz that sounds like a porn soundtrack, it's wildly inappropriate. I defy anybody to explain to me how a group of people being attacked by a Rhamphorynchus deserves to be accompanied by a merry little ditty that belongs in a comic scene. Worse yet the director seemed to fancy himself an "artist" and many shots are of miscellaneous objects in no way related to the main action. The Plesiosaur's attacks are horribly filmed, many of them not even showing the beast or its victims--the one exception being a long, drawn-out sequence where we watch the monster seemingly just staring at its victim as she bleeds to death. The rhamphorynchus fares even worse as it does not even appear until the last fourth of the film, flies around briefly, and gets in a boring fight with the Plesiosaur. The effects are awful, from bad puppets to full-scale props like the Plesiosaur head that looks like a bathtub toy with mulch glued to it. There is a brief nude scene and some surprising---if not very good--gore, but hardly enough to redeem it. And just when things finally start happening, Mount Fuji erupts and the movie ends without resolving anything. About the only thing this film does is keep its audience riveted to the screen in order to see just what nonsensical, moronic thing will happen next. My brain still hurts.
