The wealthy owner of a haunted mansion believes his home (which has been dubbed "Hell House" due to a history of bizarre happenings therein) might provide the answer to the phenomenon of life after death. To prove his theory, he enlists the help of four brave psychic investigators whom, to acquire the situation in it's entirety, set up residence in the dark and mysterious abode. Soon after, the team are nearly driven to insanity as they slowly begin to discover how the mansion got it's gloomy moniker. An atmospheric and menacing film from the director of EYEWITNESS (1971). Reviews for The Legend of Hell House
...a classic spook-house story, with all the ingredients: a scary old mansion, seances in the dark, ectoplasmic manifestations, and things that go bump in the night.
Shows how a creepy and effective story can be told with a single setting, a cast of no more than half a dozen characters, and a minimum of special effects
If John Hough, the director, and his small, willing cast maintain mild tension during their harried visit to this haunted 'hell house,' the few chills they provide are of little help.
Richard Matheson's disappointing adaptation of his own rather disappointing novel.
John Hough does a fine job with the things-that-go-bump-in-the-night aspects of the material, he fails to breathe any life into Richard Matheson's woefully underdeveloped screenplay, which he adapted from his own novel.
