This sequel, set in 1850, finds her married to Alejandro, aka Zorro (Antonio Banderas, also returning to reprise his character from MASK OF ZORRO), and demanding he stop all the derring-do and spend time with their smart-as-a-whip 10-year-old son, Joaquin (Adrian Alonso). The boy has some serious acrobatic skills, but is unaware of his father's secret identity. He can only look askance as his parents separate and Dad starts spending too much time with his hard-drinking horse, while Mom lets herself be wooed by the odious Count Armand (Rufus Sewell). It's up to little Zorro Joaquin to get to the bottom of things and get his folk-hero parents back into action. Jones is a stunning sight in her elaborate lace-and-linen ensembles, and there's some complex DA VINCI CODE-style secret society skullduggery, but otherwise this sequel has more in common with classic old Walt Disney comedies like THE APPLE DUMPLING GANG or Robert Rodiguez's SPY KIDS than with the 1998 movie. The swordfighting and death-defying action sequences are all totally bloodless, and director Martin Campbell--who also helmed the '98 film--keeps the dialogue very contemporary and child-friendly throughout. Reviews for The Legend of Zorro
I would have dumped the cute kid and the priest and brought back sexy Zorro and his gorgeous volatile wife. Instead, Banderas and Zeta-Jones morph into Republican parents.
Harken to the hacienda and hoist the tequila! It's a bold, fun-filled, swashbuckling action adventure for the whole family.
Some definitive things happened in the first one that it would seem they couldn’t replay the same shenanigans. But they found a way.
A 'funny family action film' in the Fantastic Four mold — that is, a movie whose key qualification as kid entertainment is that it isn't good enough for grown‑ups.
I could feel my life siphoning out of me as this masterpiece entered its third hour.
A school house scene, sure to be a movie memory classic, crowns the film. The whole class cheers on a 10-year-old Zorro Jr. I was absolutely rolling in the aisles! Go Adrian!
Proudly flourishing the Z that stands for zonked, The Legend of Zero -- er, Zorro - - is dumb like a lox.
Innocuous and with more than a few laughs and rousing moments, it could make for passable family entertainment some rainy afternoon. But if you remember the first movie, it'll feel like something's missing.
Despite its drawbacks, Zorro is acceptable in a pinch though not without its puzzling elements.
The Legend of Zorro is not only a generic actioner, it's a perfect example of a movie with two leads interested only in the number of zeros on their paychecks.
The Legend of Zorro is so stodgy and slow, it makes even an out-of-control steam engine seem like nothing more than a lot of hot air.
Bigger, faster and more spectacular is usually the rule for sequels. Applied to The Legend of Zorro, that rule translates into busier, sloppier, less coherent and more frantic.
So terrible that I must speak out to defend my own honor. Be assured, mis amigos, I am no fancypants dullard as depicted by señor Antonio Banderas.
The Legend of Zorro commits a lot of movie sins, but one is mortal: It turns the magnificent Elena into a nag.
Great stunts, glamorous stars, and our affection for the characters make this sequel watchable, even with a disappointing script.
The Legend of Zorro is louder, brasher and kitschier than its predecessor. It's closer in spirit to the Sunday-funnies cacophony of the Spy Kids movies, offering some of those movies' goofy pleasures.
The new Zorro is one of the rare films that aim to thrill us while lampooning the adventure genre, and hit both bull's-eyes simultaneously.
