Born into a noble family, Tolstoy left to attend university -- but never received his degree. After several unproductive years, he became an officer in the army, and began writing. In 1862, he embarked upon an ultimately troubled and unsatisfying marriage, which gave him 13 children. In 1863, his first masterpiece "War and Peace" reached the public, followed by the equally brilliant "Anna Karenina." Later, Tolstoy became deeply religious -- a turn of events that affected his art and his personal life. An in-depth look at one of literature's most esteemed figures. [More]
