Following the career of Jewish baseball star Hank Greenberg from his beginnings in the Bronx to his success in the Texas minor leagues to his signing to the Detroit Tigers in the 1930s, this documentary recounts the inspirational tale of an American hero. Including nearly 50 interviews with Greenberg himself, his family, other players, celebrities, fans, and public figures, the film uses older film clips and excerpts from Hollywood movies popular in Greenberg's day, accompanied by a spirited soundtrack of songs from the 20s and 30s. While it preserves his baseball feats, it looks beyond them to clarify Greenberg's place in American culture.

For once, the image and the reality make for a perfect fit -- the man and the symbol are one.

The film is most touching in its 47 interviews with the likes of attorney Alan Dershowitz, actor Walter Matthau, baseball greats Bob Feller, Ralph Kiner and Charlie Gehringer, and Sen. Carl Levin.

Greenberg seems down-to-earth and likable, and director Aviva Kempner slips in just enough baseball history for nonfans to follow Greenberg's story without getting bogged down in diamond minutiae.

A bulging photo album of carefully cropped idolization, its saving grace that the affable, unaffected Greenberg appears a worthy recipient of all that devotion.

Kempner has taken twelve years to complete her loving biography of a baseball legend. Hank Greenberg would have enjoyed the music and loved his terrific movie.

For a treatise on U.S. anti-Semitism in baseball, Aviva Kempner's The Life And Times Of Hank Greenberg sure is pleasant.

Were Jews the only fans of Greenberg? I doubt it, though the film makes no indication otherwise.

It becomes a look at the social and political climate of America just as much as a baseball biography.

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is informative and fun and one doesn't have to be a baseball expert to appreciate its fervor and genial charm.

A marvelous pastiche of a legendary sports hero, a compelling and fascinating tribute to one of baseball’s great figures, in size (six feet four) and accomplishment.

Hank Greenberg is a cozy affair that leaves the impression of a filmmaker too close to the material.
