Herek's direction is matter-of-fact and sometimes awkward.

She is also engaged to a Seattle Mariners star (Christian Kane). To top off her perfect life, her boss recommends her for a dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned but difficult cameraman, Pete (Edward Burns). when she's on an assignment, Lanie runs into a homeless man, the prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), who makes three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedy role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE). [More]

Reviews for Life or Something Like It
The script lurches from banal formula ... to vacuous, cringe-worthy contrivance.
It manages to squeeze by on Angelina Jolie's surprising flair for self-deprecating comedy.
A film neither bitter nor sweet, neither romantic nor comedic, neither warm nor fuzzy.
An adroit crowd-pleaser, and Jolie and Burns exude charisma and the right chemistry.
...there is enough originality in 'Life' to distance it from the pack of paint-by-number romantic comedies that so often end up on cinema screens.
The movie has no suspense, no sense of how Jolie's destiny affects her and absolutely no connection to life or anything like it.
The script by John Scott Shepherd and Dana Stevens weds every cliche of the careerist cautionary tale with the predictable beats of the romantic comedy.
What's so striking about Jolie's performance is that she never lets her character become a caricature -- not even with that radioactive hair.
It has the fizzy good spirits of a flavored bottle of seltzer water, if not champagne.
There's little potential for surprise or much creativity within this old formula.
A cautionary tale about the folly of superficiality that is itself endlessly superficial.
Jolie gives it that extra little something that makes it worth checking out at theaters, especially if you're in the mood for something more comfortable than challenging.
Angelina Jolie gives a mixed-bagged performance. Sometimes she is annoying, affected and just plain selfish...other times she endearing and funny
