Mason admits, now, after years of his parents' ongoing support, that he planned to kill his parents & collect on a phony will. He exhibits a dim wit ~ I guess in today's political correctivity & clinical parlance, we could say that the killer does not operate on a very high level of intelligence. He barely knows how & why killing is not an acceptable way to deal with his problems.
Among many of those serving time for criminal offences, I'm quite sure that psychologists & psychiatrists would agree that they 'suffer' from varying pathological degrees of low self esteem. Mason exhibits a very low opinion of himself. He's not only in need of treatment ~ but this is not explored, unless I missed it ~ but in need of being incarcerated; his whole system of denial & the compliance of the two parents sounds a sad chord. There are some good case studies of male sons with overly doting mothers & authoritarian fathers. Mason's father's comment, "What bullshit", during Mason's 'birthday party', is the tip-off for me that there are past issues that are still buried.
It's probably best that someone like Mason be in custody so that they can even consider psychological treatment, if it's even an option. But as I said, I don't even think the film deals with that aspect & I don't know why ~ and if they did, well I missed it.
I hope someone can benefit from my insights.
Take care.
