A cure for insomnia

I have no idea what's in the watercoolers of most film critics, but anyone who gave this movie a high rating needs their poetic license revoked. The pacing is dreadful, much of the acting pretty hammy, and the story, while kind of interesting, is very talky and devoid of action. This is, after all, a MOV-IE. This film has its moments, but don't go if you're sleepy.

too long and too boring... alto a great performance by lewis... and only spielberg could make a movie about the freeing of black people... without actually using any black people....

In Spielberg?s ?Lincoln,? Passive Black Characters - NYTimes.com says: "That, too, is the history of abolition; ?Lincoln? is an opportunity squandered."

How much do you know about Daniel Day-Lewis? Eh? I don't know squat about Daniel. I do know something about ears though. As a man gets older his ears get larger, because they never cease to grow throughout his life.

Next chance you get, look at how huge Tommy Lee Jones's ears are. They're GIANT! I know, I know, he can't help that!

Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was debated at several occasions to have Marfan's syndrome and also acromegaly. He grew to 6 ft. 4 inches in height and generally weighed less than 180 lb. Lincoln's body growth and energic constitution show gross evidence of pituitary hyperactivity and gonadal hypoactivity. He was a long, thin baby at birth, with unusually long, thin arms and legs. You will have to Google all these difficult words.

That is about as historically factual as we can get in this movie review. You, dear reader, will not gain any exacting Lincoln scuttlebutt today. We don't have any historians on deck here at MooPig Enterprises. We farm that out.

So we go to the Bonus Features on the DVD we rented at Red Box for 99 cents, plus tax. In the usual mention of Steven Spielberg, the making of Lincoln is prefaced with anecdote given by Mr. Spielberg. He remembers as a young lad going to the Lincoln Memorial; and walking up to the seated man at the top of the stairs.

Spielberg's imagery of the greatness of the memorial in his memorable youthful experience gives us a clue to what the movie is about: the giant white man who ended the Civil War, and signed into law the Thirteenth Amendment.

MooPig Movie Reviews Department is proud that they are not insiders in the cinema industry. We are so far afield... well, a good analogy is this quote from the movie, Daniel Day-Lewis says:
" ... Abraham Lincoln: A compass, I learnt when I was surveying, it'll... it'll point you True North from where you're standing, but it's got no advice about the swamps and dessert and chasm that you'll encounter along the way. If in pursuit of your destination, you plunge ahead, heedless of obstacles, and achieve nothing more than to sink in a swamp... What's the use of knowing True North? ... "

Lincoln, Daniel Day-Lewis,in answer to what Thaddeus Stevens, played by Tommy Lee Jones, asks:
" ... Thaddeus Stevens: You claim you can trust them. But you know what the people are. You know the inner compass that should direct the soul toward justice has ossified in white men and women, north and south, unto utter uselessness though tolerating the evil of slavery. White people cannot bear the thought of sharing this country's infinite abundance with Negroes. ..."

This theme is the crux of the biscuit in real life ... the abject failure to "share" the abundance. But, that theme is never much dealt with in this movie. Blacks are more stoically portrayed as props, one liners, and altogether waiting in the wings for "white man" to "gift" them abolition of slavery in this movie. Too bad, too. With that wellspring of knowledge Spielberg's Lincoln could have remarkably transcended its boundaries.

Suggestion for when you watch the flick, you might want to turn on the subtitles so you can appreciate the American-English jargon spoken. It also helps the flow for you the patron, when actors and actresses muff and mumble their lines.

I submit that for too many years, the media along with politicians have been overly careful not to "bore" an audience and an electorate whose intelligence has steadily declined in tandem with the control big media has over our lives.

I would suggest you READ Doris Kearn Goodwin's book TEAM OF RIVALS which served as much of the source for Spielberg's film. I also would suggest that you reflect on what the absence of a 13th Amendment might mean: it might very well mean even more employers who refuse to pay final paychecks to departing employees, essentially and in retrospect forcing these employees to work for nothing in violation of the actual 13th now in force.

I thought Daniel Day Lewis was great, as usual, as were Sally Field, Tommy Lee Jones, and most of the supporting cast. The problem is, no amount of great acting could have saved this film. Totally overrated, and one of Spielberg's weaker moments. It was historically inaccurate in it's representation of Lincoln, but that wouldn't normally kill a film for me. The problem here is that the script was brutal. Boring, long-winded, etc... Definitely does not merit a second viewing.

my favourite film of 2012 was The Master, so before u start insulting my intelligence, look at my taste in film. im all for slow films, but Lincoln IS a bore of a film. there is nothing to take away from it that cant be extracted from a history book

I am all for slow movies. One of my favorite movies is The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. But Lincoln bored me to death with all of its focus on a flawless character. Daniel Day Lewis is excellent as always but in my perspective Lincoln just isn't an interesting man in this movie. He is very generic. The movie would have been so much better off as a play. Get out of those dark rooms for God's sake! There is just nothing original about this movie ,it's completely formulaic.

Finally! Someone who agrees with me. I thought Lincoln was a good movie but not a great one. Daniel Day Lewis portrayed Lincoln as a boring politician totally lacking in charisma. I know I'm in the minority with my opinion. I know most viewers thought he was wonderful. However, his performance was overshadowed by Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones. I thoroughly enjoyed the attention to detail in the costumes and sets.

The site you give as a refrence to our opinion has some inconsistencies. Like "In reality it?s essentially a 2.5 hour courtroom drama about slavery that never happened" we'll we do have an amendment to the constitution. The site you give fails to take into account many factors. While the movie is not entirely correct, it does give a descent over view. With most people believing slavery ended with emancipation proclamation this move does correct that.

This film excellently portrays the struggle behind possibly the most important piece of legislation in our nations history. DDL masterfully shows Lincoln's own internal struggle. Some of you need to stick to drivel like Fast and Furious and stay away from films that require thought.

First off, this wasn't an action movie so the fact there was any action should be considered a gift to you. Second, this is the story of the struggle in the House to pass the 13th amendment, this didn't happen overnight it took time, lots of arguing and a lot of politics. The movie was well paced to show that. And as for the acting, well you're just wrong and I'll leave it at that.
