There is nothing bravura or overly emotional about Spielberg's direction here, but the impeccable filmmaking is no less impressive for being quiet and to the point.

"I think that Spielberg is a coward for not telling the truth about Lincoln. It does matter that he was a racist, and that he wasn't sorry for it, and that he actually promoted it! We can see how this sort of ignorance and hatred was woven into the fabric of our society. It speaks volumes about the American myth of equality, and helps us to see why such shocking disparity still exists today. Why would Spielberg ignore that? HOW could he ignore it? Omissions like this add insult to injury...which creates further injury."
