This looks like a pretty accurate pool of what will eventually be the Academy Award noms. Of course I have some quibbles, but that's what comments are for.

Sad to see "Hitchcock" and "Hobbit" omitted, although I haven't seen either yet. Also unfortunate that DiCaprio and John Goodman couldn't score Supporting nods. PT Anderson got robbed (and I'm sure will get robbed) on the director's chair.

Noomi Rapace got robbed in the Action Actresses. That one is purely spite. Whatever problems people had with the script, her performance was magnificent. And "Prometheus" looks to be robbed of it's generally admitted visual brilliance as well.

Sad to see "Seven Psychpaths" omitted from either Ensemble or Original Screenplay lists, but keeping it out of any of the Comedy catagories is reprehensible. Tatum in "Jump Street" over Sam Rockwell? No. That's not funny at all. As it is, I'm hoping for a "Bernie" sweep in those catagories.

I didn't know anyone was taking "Bully" seriously anymore (oh wait! Weinstein, got it.) But "Invisible War" (shown recently on the Documentary Channel) got snubbed, perhaps not to upset Keith Urban.

Why lump Sci-Fi and Horror together? Might as well call it "catagories we don't care about". And the Action catagory could use "The Raid" as a fifth choice (guess they don't like the competition).

The Foreign catagory needs more diversity like "Like Someone in Love", "Tabu", "Flowers of War". Why only four selections? "Samsara", "Holy Motors" and "Tales of the Night" are other achievements that routinely have gone overlooked this season.

What did you think of THE INVISIBLE WAR, seriously? Also agree on THE RAID, which I thought was the best action film of the year.

Eye-opening. I had heard some stories, but it's good to have them centralized here.

Everyone keeps shitting on the master but they actually gave it the credit it deserves, I can live without him getting the directing nom but it still would of been nice

I was thinking the same thing. This is a very strong field.

Where's Leomardo DiCaprio for Best Supporting Actor? Paul Thomas Anderson for Best Director? And why are there 6 nominees for Best Original Screenplay and only 5 for Best Adapted?

Django Unchained hasn't even been released yet, don't complain that he didn't get nominated because you haven't seen the fucking movie yet

Obviously disappointed that Kirby Dick's documentary THE INVISIBLE WAR wasn't considered, otherwise there is a lot of great nominations here. Third on PTA getting snubbed for Best Director...Tom Hooper? If someone can please explain to me why Hooper deserved the Director Oscar for THE KING'S SPEECH, I would really like to know. Over Christopher Nolan AND David Fincher? What was so special about the direction in THE KING'S SPEECH to warrant Oscar, seriously I want to know.

Dec 11 - 01:56 PM

Gary Devenport

Gary Devenport

The only reason The King's Speech worked was because of the rich characters in David Seidler's screenplay and all the near perfect performances. Hooper's direction felt like something out of a made for HBO movie, like when he did the John Adams miniseries. I don't understand why he won over Fincher and Nolan either.

Thank you Gary! Hell, I would have given it to Ben Affleck for THE TOWN over Hooper. I prefer Tobe to Tom even.

A few months ago I watched the Gruesome Edition of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2: I can definitely see why it's been experiencing a cult resurrection in recent years. Now I'd love to try their award-winning chili! ("The secret...is in the meat!")

All that fucking list lincoln, skyfall, the hobbit (which you haven't seen), and a bit of looper. That's 4 movies out of the hundreds of great ones that came out this year.

Best supporting actress: Sally Field in Lincoln it would be atrocious to see anybody else winning that category. It is already a travesty she was nominated for supporting actress instead of best actress! Her performance in that movie was beyond moving and certainly timeless!

Dec 12 - 06:07 AM

Christopher Kulik

Christopher Kulik

So you are saying the Academy is probably going to pull another Meryl Streep and give a third Oscar to Sally? Haven't seen the movie yet I admit, but Sally has already won Best Actress twice (1979's NORMA RAE and 1984's PLACES IN THE HEART)? I love Field, I'm just saying.

Dec 12 - 12:48 PM

Lance Reeder

Lance Reeder

Sally's performance was good, but IMO it was definately the weakest of the big 3. DDL and Tommy Lee Jones gave much stronger performances, but Sally's category has weaker competition too so who knows. Probably why they went supporting instead of best actress. Much stronger nominations in that category. My Money's on Chastain and Hathaway taking down the ladies awards.

All of these look like they are getting a Run in a lot of awards. My one hope is Jack Black as Bernie. That was a fantastic performance. Go Jack Black!

I think it's crazy they added a song to the all ready Large group of Songs in Les Mis. That's weired to me.

agreed - when I first saw it I thought it should be the first lead comedy performance for a male to be Oscar nommed in years. Looking unlikely now..

I loved Jack Black in BERNIE, but Matthew McCaugheney is also very good, though he's nominated for MAGIC MIKE (actually, he is awesome in that). The problem is that it's a very low profile movie that came out too early in the year.

How is The Hobbit not there for Ensemble? Or supporting cast? it annoys me how big budget films (i.e, Inception, LOTR) normally get snubbed for some of the main awards.

LOTR won best pic in 2003 so it didn't get snubbed.

Because from the early reviews it sounds like The Hobbit is just very good instead of stellar. It's equally wrong to assume a movie is going to be great just because its predecessors were. Movie's need to be judged on their individual merits and since none of us have seen it we need to at least entertain the idea that The Hobbit might not rock our world.

I am supremely peeved that Moonrise Kingdom didn't get a nom for Best Cinematography. It was a beautifully shot film! I'd even say it should have gotten a Best Art Direction nom.

Am I the only one who wasn't blown away by Javier Bardem in Skyfall? I mean he was good, but he didn't do anything really innovative for me. It was like he crossed his role in No Country with classic Bond villains like Goldfinger. I liked Skyfall, but didn't think it was as good as Casino Royale.

I agree on Javier Bardem in Skyfall. Almost felt like he acted kind of restrained in that.

Not much love for The Hobbit, Django Unchained, or Beasts of the Southern Wild. Though, based on reviews for Peter Jackson's latest return to Middle-Earth, perhaps not surprising for Bilbo & Co.

I adored BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD; looks like Wallis (damn, she broke my heart) is going to get the lion's share of the honors, although Dwight Henry recently won an award. Dammit, it should be seen by more out there, a true original in every sense.

Man. There is going to be some competition this year! I am no expert, but I am guessing the obvious pics for best picture will be Argo, Lincoln, and Zero Dark Thirty. (Interesting time for Zero Dark Thirty and Argo to come out, don't you think?) I am sure I will only like Django Unchained in the worst case scenario and LOVE it in the best case scenario. Don't expect much love for Django from the Academy. Quentin makes bold, brutal films that aren't exactly Oscar friendly. But you never know. I was surprised (pleasantly) that No Country for Old Men recieved the Best Picture win in 2007 - a very violent and brutal film that wasn't historical at all.
