Eh the Hobbit had serious pacing issues, if Jackson would have trimmed instead of indulging his need for a 3 hour film I have a feeling it would be up there.

My head hurt when I saw the Directors field. I'm happy Wallis got nominated, but where are Affleck and Bigelow?

Yes. The academy hates Leo. That is not a shocker there. but seriously, Tarantino should have gotten a best director nod. And where is the nomination for Chasing Ice as best documentary?!

William, you missed my point. Wings, Grand Hotel and Driving Miss Daisy are the only Best Picture winners whose directors were not nominated in the Best Director category. It's a rarity for films to win Best Picture without a Best Director nomination.

True, it is rare, but not impossible to achieve.

Yeah and a few years back Katherine won for best picture with The Hurt Locker and James Cameron won best director for Avatar. It seems like they do that a lot.

To Chad Langen, James Cameron did not win Best Director for Avatar, Katherine definitely won both Best Picture and Best Director.

Nothing but technical nominations for SKYFALL; nothing at all for THE DARK KNIGHT RISES. These are critically acclaimed in their category, and they do an excellent job of filling the escape fare category. But even with an option for 10 nominees, for the Academy it's just more options for pictures that are sufficiently serious. Maybe they need a category for "Escape Fare", something like the category for Animated Feature Films, and like the division the Golden Globes has for Comedy/Musical (because even MOONRISE KINGDOM can't crack the current system. Escape Fare could also include RomComs and horror films, like THE CABIN IN THE WOODS. I know, it would make the awards show even longer, but there is something to be said for encouraging good escape fare by honoring it.

I was rooting for Matthew McConaughey this year. Magic Mike, Killer Joe, and Bernie -- three great performances, all overlooked.

You can say the Academy doesn't favor Wes Anderson (just 1 for Moonrise?), but stop claiming they dislike Leo. He's nominated often; however, he was overshadowed by Waltz this year and went in-and-out of an accent last year as Hoover.

The Academy had a choice: Either make it super exciting for us, or, make it really easy for them to vote. They chose the latter.

Honestly look at these movies, besides a couple of misses (mostly in the directors category), these nominations are near spot on for actually good movies that can be considered art.

I know Wikipedia isn't the most accurate source of information, but it says that Paperman also got nominated for Best Animated Short Film.

For me the Oscars lost all credibility years ago. Nominations/winners are generally senseless. I only watch it for the Red Carpet event :P
