It means to use the Cruise-Redford-Streep star power to get us talking about things we ought to be talking about.
Why talk about things that are actually meaningfull, when being entertained is so much more... entertaining. Who doesnt complain about the type of coverage and stories the news covers, yet they continue to fight for ratings. Who thinks now from reality tv and sit coms that the general population must be incredibly dim to be entertained on such a low level. Are the people who need constant entertainment the future of the united states? Are ratings and entertainment what make life worth living for? Sadly with the newer generations I must say yes. When he said Rome is burning, I must say that it is us who are burning it by being thing thinking entertained children in front of a tv set.

The last paragraph of this sums up the movie beautifully. I happened to love it, but of course certain political groups will automatically disagree.
As to Johov, your reasoning has a lot of flaws. Often it is the young people who are attempting to change anything, while the 'learned' and 'disguinished' take no action. You are also trying to pin all America's problems on a TV set, which can be used in a very educational and inspiring way. A great example of that would be this movie. If one person opens their mind a little bit, and entertains the notion-even for a second-of thinking about things, coming to their own conclusions, then this movie will have served its purpose.
