His pattern is interrupted one day when a beautiful woman approaching middle age accosts him for a ride to Lisbon, fleeing from her family. Joao assists the woman only to get deeply involved in the intriguing life of this stranger he has encountered. Carmen Maura, one of Spain's most accomplished actresses, gives an incredible performance in this unusual combination of the tension of a gangster film with the emotional trappings of a family drama, all shot in the harsh Spanish sunlight by cinematographer Aitor Mantxola.
