Mr. Dalton, the latest successor to the role of James Bond, is well equipped for his new responsibilities. He has enough presence, the right debonair looks and the kind of energy that the Bond series has lately been lacking.

When the defection proves to be an elaborate ploy, Bond woos her anyway, and together they follow a trail to a crooked American arms dealer supplying weapons to Afghanistan. Dalton finally assumes the role of Bond after refusing it 16 years earlier with DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER. The film is loosely based on Ian Fleming's short story, with Dalton's heavier Bond closer in spirit to that of Fleming's original creation. [More]

Reviews for The Living Daylights
Dalton is a solid, serious, but a bit colorless as Bond. Still, the action is good.
A pure back-to-basics action-adventure spy drama which mostly delivers.
Dalton, with his athletic sort of Brit-yuppie work ethic and romantic streak, comes out all right.
Has there ever been a weaker Bond villain than Whitaker? A more fatuous performance than Joroen Krabbe's Koskov? A less endearing Bond girl than Maryam D'Abo's Kara?
Dalton brought to the part a strong dramatic presence, a heightened sensitivity, a greater human vulnerability than ever before, and a decided seriousness.
This is the Bond film the fans have been waiting for a very long time.
The raw materials of the James Bond films are so familiar by now that the series can be revived only through an injection of humor. That is, unfortunately, the one area in which the new Bond, Timothy Dalton, seems to be deficient.
The story is too choppy and just meanders from one locale to another without bringing the parts together into a compelling whole.
