Bruckheimer Producing a Lone Ranger Movie?

Please cast Nicolas Cage as Tonto. Please.

In the latest example of the studios' insatiable hunger for sequel-ready franchises, Entertainment Weekly reports that Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer are saddling up for a Lone Ranger movie.

According to EW, "Terry Rossio and Ted Elliot are working on a draft" for Bruckheimer and Disney. Although the studio won't confirm the writers' involvement, it makes sense; Rossio and Elliot were the duo behind the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy that just finished grossing obscene sums of money for Disney. A Lone Ranger timeline, courtesy of EW:

Adapted from a 1930s radio show, The Lone Ranger was a live-action television show popular in the 1950s. It featured a masked Texas Ranger in the old West who relied on his Native American sidekick, Tonto. A 1981 flop film adaptation, The Legend of the Lone Ranger, failed to make a household name out of Klinton Spilsbury. More recently, The WB tried to launch a TV version of the tale, starring One Tree Hill's Chad Michael Murray, but it never made it to series. If this new script will ever reach the big screen is anyone's guess, but predicting which actor will get to utter the Ranger's popular catchphrase, "Hi-Ho Silver, Away" should lead to fun online chatter.

On that last count, EW is absolutely right; in fact, placing bets on the casting might wind up being the only fun thing about a Lone Ranger movie. It seems likely that the writers' strike could send this thing into limbo, but why wait for development to heat up? Let's start talkin' Tonto!

I have two questions... 1. how much controversy will rise up when they have a native american guy running around doing extremely stereotypical things? and 2. Has anyone seen that Far Side comic where an old lone ranger is reading an "indian-english" dictionary where he finds out that "kee mo sabi" actually means "i f-ing hate you" or something along those lines?

i don't have high hopes for this idea... could be decent with the right cast though.

i am apparently all about the lists today.

Count me in on this. It'd be fun to know if they are going to pay homage to the old serials in much the same fun and fashion as Indiana Jones does. I'm not a fan of brainless action-adventure, but if done right like Indy or the first Pirates, this could very well be one of the funnest films in recent memory. If they make it darker like the new comic out now, it would pay off as it wouldnt be a hokey.

Bruckheimer has produced some good stuff, and some not so good stuff, this can go either way. I'll end up seeing it tho.

the indian guy can't be presented in that way, not nowadays. the indian groups would go apesh3t(thanks 4 taking away the Fighting Illini mascot, indian givers...) and they're about as good as jesse and al at getting things "right" the way they want. ANY kind of racial stereotyping won't happen, at all...if this gets made. nless of course they remake it into a comedy much like Starsky and Hutch...who knows...

Someone needs to pull the Trigger on this idea. Talk about flogging a dead horse!

That was a cute one Dracus. I wonder though how many people these days actually know who Trigger was.

I don't see how this could be successful. Who do you market to? Kids don't care about cowboys and indians anymore and the older crowd who grew up with Lone Ranger don't go to movies or they're dead.

Tombstone, 3:10 to Yuma, Open Range, Maverick, etc.

Just like war movies, they have to be done just right to strike a chord with people. I think this genre just needs a good breakout movie... like what Saving Private Ryan did for WWII movies and Platoon did for Vietnam movies. With the popularity right now of superhero movies, I think it is probably one of the best times to consider doing a Lone Ranger film... sort of like how Dick Tracy rode the coat-tails of Keaton's Batman. If it were me, I would probably go a little bit campy with this... they tried gritty in the 1980 movie and it just didn't work. I'd go light on story and heavy on action if it was me.. hey, it usually works for James Bond movies.

Yeah, that old Far Side was hilarious.

How about Mark Dacascos for Tonto, opposite some big office draw actor playing Lone Ranger? Okay, so he's Hawaiian, but he was a damn good sidekick in "Brotherhood of the Wolf."

SInce it's Bruckheimer, I'm willing to bet it'll star Nicholas Cage. Imagine him saying "Hi ho, Silver!". Travesty.

I am quite excited about this, Way i see it, it could go 3 ways....

1. a serious action /indiana jones style adventure series.

2. a Carrey/Ferrel style comedy much like Shanghai Noon.

3. a waste of US dollars.

I think in either way 1 or 2, it could be great. If tackled right. I mean, the Zorro films were pretty good. And so was shanghai noon. so Fingers crossed that which ever way they choose they get it right. Also, there are a series of Comics out right now which are very tough and gritty so that would also rock.

Maybe it's because it's a Disney/Bruckenheimer collaboration, but I see this as being more similar to The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. Overproduced and campy.

The only way I think this movie will work is if they take all the campy dialouge out and all the other 50's crap and make it a little more gritty. Keep it fun, but make a real western out of it. There hasn't been a fun Western in awhile

tonto's gonna be played by that guy adam beach who played native americans in 'flags of our fathers' and that tv mini series 'bury my heart at wounded knee.' now that that's taken care of, how bout the lone ranger. hmm, two words: johnny depp. as retarded as that is, would you put it past dis-heimer for a second? those two 'pirates' morons will write him a bunch of cornball lines, make it an adventure movie with comedic elements and wait for the money to start rolling in. despicable? of course. but if you expected anything more from this, then that's your fault.

I wrote part of a script several years ago that revamped the Lone Ranger and created more of a serious look at the character. We lost the "Hi-Ho Silver" catch phrase and the "black mask" and was more revenge epic than anything else. The twist was the best part and no one saw it coming. I'd love a chance to pitch my script. But alas....

Zorro comes from a similar genre and did great, the first time. This has a good chance if done right. Again, its Bruckheimer, you never know...

JackHorner1979, so is the twist that the Lone Ranger was dead all along, and Tonto was a villain that derailed trains, and the horse was secretly El Kabong?

Dammit, you saw that coming. Back to my Snorks script. But seriously, I am a huge fan of the Lone Ranger mythos but found as I was writing that he has excessive baggage and at times is cornier than Nebraska. I wanted to make him more gritty and raw. Lose some of the back stories that weighed the character down unnecessarily. It was a concept that would have been wonderful under the direction of Rob Zombie.... still I plug away. Something has to stick.

This sounds stupid. There are countless other characters out there who haven't been in a movie yet. Why keep rehashing the same old stuff every 20 years? If they make it, it will flop.

i don't think that a lone ranger movie is the best idea....... and Jerry Bruckheimer sucks.... i have never seen a movie by him that i liked.
