"Love & Diane" tells the epic story of a family over three generations. At its heart lies the highly charged relationship between a mother and daughter, desperate for love and forgiveness but struggling against implacable odds. For Love the world changed forever when she and her siblings were torn from their drug-addicted mother, Diane, and thrust into a terrifying world of institutions and foster homes. Ten years have passed since that day. Love and her five siblings have been reunited with Diane again. But they are almost strangers to each other; all have been scarred by the years of separation. Now Love is 18 and HIV+. And she has just given birth to a son, Donyaeh. Consumed by guilt, Diane throws all her faith and will into rebuilding the family that her own drug addiction destroyed, as Love struggles to contain her overwhelming anger about the past. But when Diane confides her fears for her daughter to a therapist, suddenly the police are at the door. Donyaeh is taken from Love. To the family it is as if history has repeated itself. While the film takes us deep into the life of a single family, it also offers an unblinking look at the Byzantine "system" that aims to help but as often frustrates the family's attempts to improve their situation. "Love & Diane" tells the story of a mother struggling to bring her son home and of a family fighting for a chance at long-deferred dreams.

Reviews for Love and Diane
By the time the film ends, we have come to feel that we are practically members of the Hazzard family. The flip side is that we are also exhausted by the numbing accumulation of mundane detail, all too vividly rendered.
Dworkin gives a compassionate face to the miasma of New York's family court-social services matrix.
Dworkin's potent documentary is a definitive distillation of life in America's black underclass.
There is meat of humanity here, love both true and forlorn, little shaping beyond the choice of what to include.
I can't imagine an attentive viewer leaving Love & Diane without increased understanding and concern with regard to inner-city life.
Dworkin assembles Love and Diane with great articulation and a human compassion worthy of Frederick Wiseman.
From first shot to last, Dworkin's movie is a continuously absorbing, sometimes revelatory, frequently moving experience.
A serious and illuminating documentary that, at two hours and 35 minutes, fully devotes itself to painting a family portrait seldom allowed such rich cinematic detail.
Primarily of interest to those in the helping professions, Director Jennifer Dworkin presents this less as a case study than as a study in survival, and proves that strength of character often exists even in situations where abuse has occurred.
A velvet-swaddled, iron-fisted documentary that will set standards of vérité filmmaking for years to come.
A clear-eyed look at the struggles of a Brooklyn family trying to break the cycles of neglect, drugs, and poverty with sometimes surprising results.
This important, psychologically rich film not only overturns the ugly stereotype of the welfare mother with no ambition and plenty of children, but also avoids blindly condemning New York State's much-maligned child welfare system.
